Please tell me what voodoo ritual I need to perform for mpv to display the correct fonts. I tried copying all my fonts from Windows onto Linux, I tried installing VLC (does the same thing) and I tried reinstalling mpv three times. The only things I haven't done are compile it (I don't know how to) or get it from the AUR (see previous). What should I do?

Has anyone got the WWE Network to play in Firefox or Chromium when using Ubuntu? I have updated to the newest version of flash and it will play the intro video that plays before everything, but hangs with the spinning loading icon when it tries to play the actual broadcast. I have also tried changing the user agent to Firefox on Windows, but it does not do anything different.

Thats why you find a font you like and make it the default font for all subtitles.

Why are you getting angry? I'm asking a question because I don't know the answer. If you don't know, don't act like you do and then get pissy when I don't instantly figure out the solution on my own. Here's what I know:
>video-specific fonts show properly with no extra configuration or hunting down individual fonts that need to be changed out with every new file
>people on /g/ are able to watch .mkvs through mpv on Linux and have the correct subtitles
Logic tells us that there must BE a solution, but it's apparently the most tightly-guarded secret on Earth and no one will disclose it and explain how it's done. I guess I'll learn how to build mpv and see if that does it; if not, expect more questions.

There is no sekrit club or repo that has special access. They set it them selves or they use the font embedded in the media file.

No that's normal. Select the driver you want to use and select either of the ones that start with 'from' to boot into the live environment.

You should always check the sum of an iso before using it btw. You'll know if it was corrupted or otherwise fucked with if the sums don't match.

Does mpv not set a default font, then? If it actually reads the font within the container it must not be configured to do that out of the box, because that's not what's happening for me. And I may be dense, but I'm learning.

If you follow the books to the T - none of it is really difficult, but the moment you want to customize your install or introduce some kind of package management so that updating the system is less autistic it obviously gets progressively more and more difficult.
On that note, for example, I had almost no problems building LFS with Crux's pkgutils (ripping off pkgfiles from Crux repo and combining with configuration options from the books where there are discrepancies) but any time I try to get a hardened LFS going (from combining instructions from the abandoned HLFS book, modern LFS book, wiki pages of Hardened Gentoo project that describe their toolchain and information from the actual ebuild files they utilize to build the toolchain) I always fail really hard with compile errors/stuff not working as expected.

>>

for some reason archfags get asshurt when you use an installer, but arch anywhere is fine. Its finished install is exactly the same as arch, unless you pick some extra packages during install.

According to your own words, doing anything else will make you machine not comfy. But since you're a hypocrite and you will use Arch Anywhere, you'll end up with the same "problem.

>>59997241

>arch anywhere is fine. Its finished install is exactly the same as arch
Then why do you use it? It is not the same.
It cannot cover any potential installation scenario. If you have a simple need, then it's utterly retarded to use an abstraction layer for the 10 lines you have to write.

int newint = var;
int *p = &newint;

return p;

int i2 = 24;

printf("\nreturning pointer from function\n");
printf("calling ip = retptr(i2)\n");

printf("&i2 = %x\n", &i2);

Systemd is larger and more complex than Runit. It has unneeded features that other software does better. That's bloat. I really don't care about simplifying the jobs of lazy distro maintainers who care more about minimising their own effort that the quality of the distro.
>testing
My point is some of the packages aren't tested enough, but some of them take too long. Void doesn't have this problem because of its competent developers.
It should be easy to make sure there's no proprietary software on the system, through a dedicated repository like Debian and Void (void has the problem of binary blobs though). I don't really care if a nonfree repo is enabled by default, just give users the choice of disabling it.
Arch is disorganised and basically devoid of global policies for the distro. Beyond the meaningless "arch way" that the developers don't even care about, there are no rules like the Debian contract. Everything in the distro is just carelessly considered "good enough".

>KDE is the most "Windows like" DE so that's probably why.
Because it has a panel in the bottom?
Or graphical frontends for config files?
Is Ubuntu wanted to stand out, they could easily make the panel left side of the screen, use the icon only theme and make it look like unity.
They could even make the integrated toolbar thing if they wanted to make the transition normal.
Or do as Ubuntu mate which gives you several options of default looks.
Or even better, take the welcome setup tool from chakra and improve it to suit their needs.
But they probably won't as a lot of the employees were working on the software used in Ubuntu, so I guess the transition to gnome is easier.

Putting a new PC together Saturday and apparently you can't install win7 on it and I really don't want to use Win10 so it looks like its time to go Linux. I've been reading articles and watching videos for almost two weeks and I'm still having trouble deciding on what distro/DE to get. Probably xfce or kde for a DE but not sure. I don't think I want gnome or unity. I've been kind of leaning towards Manjaro but have also looked at OpenSUSE as well as Mint and Zorin is supposed to be easy to use but unsure if its actually decent. Then there is the whole systemd thing which has fucked me up and would pretty much leave me with PCLinuxOS because I don't want to fuck with slackware right away, I don't think, so I am torn.

I don't do a lot of demanding stuff. I don't play any new games though it would be nice if I could run Serious Sam and stuff like that because I like to play them sometimes but not sure if that is possible with linux.

The things I mostly use now are VLC, DC++, IRC, Newsgroups, private trackers, freenet, a comic reader, a music player, and general web browsing.

Not sure if specs matter. Its using a G4560 cpu, 16gb ram, 1x240Gb SSD, 4x8Tb HDD and 2x4Tb HDD. All WD Reds.

Such a system (without any GNU) wouldn't be a Linux system either. It would be a system/software collection without a name, since it's basically, like GNU, a clone of UNIX, or more of a clone of GNU (since UNIX source isn't available).
>>
Honestly though, binary blobs aren't that bad. I imagine if the manufacturer included some storage on the device, like your graphics card, to fit the proprietary firmware on, you probably wouldn't know, or even care. AMD does this, with a proprietary VBIOS, as well as other blobs in some cards. The advantage of free vs proprietary drivers is amazing though. Nouveau depends on many blobs for the cards to even load, yet has much less restrictions than the Nvidia driver (ie. Wayland support is garbage on Nvidia, and optimus actually works pretty well on nouveau.) Because people are free to modify and improve the driver itself, and work around the functional firmwares themselves.

Seeing as putting the disk in the drive showed me its internal files, I restarted my computer thinking it'd start the installation process for my purchased disk, but it instead took me straight to Windows.
Hopefully the screenshot provides necessary extra info.

Is it really fair to call it just Linux still? Even torvalds himself admitted that the kernel isn't even close to everything in the finished system, before he realised he could make more shekels by not calling it GNU. Your kernel can only be compiled with GNU's compilers. Even without the coreutils you probably use a few aspects of GNU userland. You probably use Glibc. Linux was missing a userland, and GNU was missing a kernel. They both combined to create something nice. Versions of Linux with just busybox are just variations on the original GNU+Linux combination. Please accept that GNU is significant to your system.
>>
>>59999529
Sorry for treating you a bit like a retard, but have you changed boot order in your BIOS?
>>
>>59999529
If this isn't bait:
You didn't need to pay some idiot for a disc. Just use a usb stick with Rufus to make a live usb. You probably need to go to the BIOS settings by pressing some key quickly in boot, like f10 or delete. In your motherboard manual it should say, or as it boots on the screen. Then either put the disc at the top of the boot list, or it might give you the option to manually override the order and boot once with that disc.
>>
Ultra retard question: why can't people just decompile proprietary drivers and make there own? Is the only reason not to that it's illegal? If that would be too complex, why can't proprietary blobs be decompiled? They're only a few megabytes.
>>
>>59999730
decompiling is not just a 1:1 translation of machine code to human readable code, you also do not get the notes that the source code would have
>>
>>59999730
You can't decompile binaries completly, however, you can reverse engineer how they communitate with other programs or your hardware and based on that, write a free replacement. That's perfectly legal.
>>
>>59999638
I've tried several times to access the bios, but the keyboard would be disabled for some reason, and getting a new keyboard didn't help much. It also doesn't help that the BIOS I went to is very different from the traditional BIOS.

>>59999673
Well I only recently figured out that a program for writing windows compatible images works better on my system then Rufus. But for some reason after going through the installation process for a different OS (Bunsenlabbs) the only things available on boot were Bunsenlabs installation and Windows.

I wrote about 1100 lines of C over 2 days FOR FREE in my free time. Ask me anything.
This is in addition to the 2000-odd lines of Python I wrote at work.

Full Disk Encryption. Depending on the distro you can do it easily from the graphical install, or else there are guides on the internet.

Well, it took three or four days and copying a random config file, but it's finally displaying subtitles normally.

And now I'm not sure if the video playback is bad or the file is just slow so I have to boot into Windows and watch everything there anyways. Loving the Linux meme.
