I have one of these flash drives, and as I've done multiple times before, I used a program called "EaseUS Partition Master" to delete its partition (so it's all unallocated space) and create a new one to replace it.
Deleting the old partition went flawlessly, and when I created a new one it went to 100% but instead of telling me it finished, it told me that there was an error in writing system information or something like that.
It worked flawlessly up to that point, but since then, the drive is visible to the computer, but it's like it has no partition or unallocated space.
It's like a flash drive with no storage space at all, and I can't do anything.
EaseUS Partition Master doesn't even see it now, and the Disk Management utility just says "No Media".
When I right-click on the device in "Computer" and select "Format" nothing happens.
What can I attempt now?
Format using Linux and Gparted, but it seems your drive is dead, it ran out of write cycles
>>59987538
But it worked perfectly up until now, and I don't know if this proves anything but I've ran an error scan with HD Tune Pro less than an hour before repartitioning, and it showed zero problems.
Could it be that something happened during the partition creation and it got corrupted somehow?
>>59987594
>But it worked perfectly up until now,
That's the case for most things before they break.
>>59987840
I meant that it's not broken or defective, and if it doesn't work anymore it's because of something that happened during the partition creation.
try Rufus, otherwise listen to the other guy and accept that it's dead you fucking moron
It's dead, trust me. Fuck it, buy a 16gb for $4 on newegg like I did.
>>59987897
Rufus doesn't read it either.
Is it possible that something that happened in software could permanently kill the drive without there being a possibility of changing something in software to make it work again?
>>59987291
>4 GB
Surprised it lasted as long as it did. It's dead, RIP, trash it, buy a 32 GB flash drive for $10.
>>59987291
>m-muh $2 flash drive...
>>59987925
Do some looking into testdisk. It's a wonderful tool that can be somewhat advanced, but you know that if testdisk fails, the disk is gone.
>>59987960
It's weird that no program can see it, but Windows Explorer and Disk Management can.
>>59987981
It's not that weird at all
You need to take first guy's advice >>59987538
Windows is shit for recovering dead drives
>>59987981
What they see is the device itself, not the contents. There's an important difference there.
>>59988025
Alright I'm going to try Gparted.
>>59988033
I know. Nothing else even sees the drive. It's like it's not even connected.
Windows at least sees that something is connected.
>>59988043
If the device doesn't show on Linux, send on over the standard error log
>>59988043
>>59988271
Gparted can see it.
Now I've started to format it, and we'll see how it goes.
usbdev.ru
Just run diskpart and use the clean command. It's basically a one step fix for everything that can go wrong with a USB stick
>>59987291
>hurr-hurr Im using partition master to erase my top secret porn collection cause win format is not enought
>hurr-hurr my drive died
to the trash it goes
Anything I do on Gparted gives me these error messages:
>Input/output error during write on dev/sdd
>Error opening dev/sdd: No such file or directory
and gets aborted.
>>59988726
The drive was completely empty when I started working on it.
I wanted to repartition it because it showed about 20% of its space was filled with something, and I wanted to delete the partition to make sure it didn't have wasted space on it.
In hindsight, I should've kept the old one.
>>59988768
In hindsight you should have format it using windows.. at least this functions works correctly..
<
>>59988794
Yeah, I guess so.
>>59988729
use diskpart, just open up an admin command prompt and type diskpart
type "list disk"
find which disk you want to use
type "select disk X"
type "clean"
type "create partition primary"
type "select partition 1"
type "format fs=ntfs label="whatever""
type "assign" to assign a drive letter
type "exit"
problem solved
>>59988843
problem solved my ass
diskpart won't see the drive
>>59988843
Diskpart can see the drive, but when I run "clean" it doesn't work
use rufus
>>59988957
what brand of usb device is it? if it's a sandisk try to find the old u3 software. i don't think sandisk host it anymore but it's worth a try.
also, i dunno if this will work but some guy apparently recovere from this error by going into device manager and uninstalling the usb device while it was still plugged in. after that unplug it and plug it back in and windows might ask to repair it.
>>59989148
Yes it's a Sandisk. Just like the one in the OP's picture.
I'll try those two methods, thank you.
>>59989148
Uninstalled it from the device manager, and when I plugged it back in it tried installing the drivers and then gave me pic related.
>>59989148
I found an installer for the U3 software here:
http://wayback.archive.org/web/20151007071637/http://u3.sandisk.com:80/
But when I run it this is what I see, so I guess this won't work either.
I have to go in 5 minutes
If anyone has any suggestion please post it here.
I really need this drive.
Thank you very much in advance.
>>59990046
The amount of time you are spending troubleshooting your dead flash drive is more valuable than the flash drive itself. Just buy a new one already.
>>59990380
My time is completely worthless and I literally can't afford to buy another one, so if I can't fix this it means I won't have a flash drive for a long time, which is a major bummer because I use it every single day and I rely on it for many things.
I'd rather try everything I can than just give up and accept that it's broken.
>>59987291
Why would you use that software? Windows' disk management tools have never given me problems
>>59991947
I always use it for everything (since the Windows one doesn't have all the features I need) so I'm used to do such things with it.
Before today it never gave me any problem whatsoever, so I had no reason to doubt it.
Attempting one last bump

> shitgate drive
Well famalan, you deserved it. I also had 2 Seagate drives that stopped working out of nowhere. Don't even bother trying to recover. This drives are time bombs.
>>59996462
The seagate drive is just the disk in the laptop (still workink fine), not the broken flash drive (a SanDisk like in the OP picture).
Are you even supposed to fucking partition flash drives?
I was under the impression that shit was hardcoded in the damn flash chip and attempts to change it broke them.
>>59997511
I don't know.
If that's true, then it could very well be the reason why mine showed that error and stopped working.
>>59987291
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
>>59998378
It's not true, they can be partitioned like anything else.
They just only last for so many writes before going haywire.
>>59997511
You can definitely partition them, although Windows hides the option. You can still do it and read/write to each in Android/Linux
You could try reflashing the firmware for your specific USB penor
If you're lucky, it might work
>>59987291
OP if you haven't shoved the stick up your ass by now, you should definitely do so.
>>60001247
I'm trying to do that, but I need to download the software from a chinese forum, and to register I have to solve pic related, but I have no idea how.
There's only a text field where I imagine I have to put the answer.
>>60001247
>>60001890
The fields are:
Username
Password

The thing it asked in the pic is transistor(晶体管) labelled as Q50
Also >密码过长
password length limit in (current year)
>>60002784
Wow, thank you so much.
I've managed to complete the registration now. I don't think I'd have done it without your help.
This is fucking hilarious...
>>59988454
this
cmd (as admin)
diskpart
list disk
select disk #
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
If that doesn't fix it, probably nothing will.
>>60004557
>>60005207
refund it
>>60005304
You mean take it to the store I bought it from to bet my money back?
It was bought in 2009, so I don't think that's possible.
>>60005324
buy a new one
>>60005324
to GET my money back*
>>59987291
May have sorted something maybe? Something must have ducked up the Flash memory. Open it up to see if you can see any problems. If nothing obvious, shit's fucked.
>>60005338
See >>59991692
>>60005357
Thank you, but I'd have to break the plastic case to see that, so I'm going to keep this option as the very last attempt.
No other ideas?
I can't seem to do anything to the firmware because the computer barely even sees the drive, so I've exhausted my options.
Bumping a last time.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.
>>60009432
Try the the HP USB Formatting Tool, but by the sound of it your drive is fucked.
>>60009655
This can see it but gives this error message when I tell it to start.
>>60009943
Does Chipgenius recognize your drive? What controller is it using?
>>60010067

Unfortunately I'm not seeing any MP tools for a SanDisk controller, other than that Chinese one, which I assume you've tried.
>>60010220
Yes, that was the forum I was trying to register on.
Their downloads didn't recognize the drive.
Thank you anyway.
>>60010243
I'll just leave this here. Maybe one of these will help, but I doubt it.

>>60010327
I'll try them, thank you very much.
>>60010327
>>60010337
Nope.
None of them can detect the drive.
