Disclaimer: I'm new to smartphones.

I've been trying to find a guide for rooting a redmi note 4. I found several different ones but it seems like each iteration of the phone has a specific guide for it.

https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.ligi.materialteatimer
https://www.gizdev.com/install-twrp-root-redmi-note-4/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/how-to/guide-redmi-note-4-unlock-bootloader-t3517806

Only one of them has the guide for the Chinese ROM I think. Which one is the correct one? I have the MTK Helio X20 build.

It's worth considering a Moto G because it comes with a fairly vanilla version of Android that just works™. Other manufacturers tend to customize Android in shitty way. Anyone know a decent ROM that would still support this ancient thing?

I find that more and more manufacturers are going for the vanilla Android look because why spend time customizing the whole OS when it's looked halfway presentable for years. To be honest I could go and buy the S8 right now. However, I am still rocking a Note 4. No custom ROM, still running Android 6.0 official ROM. The camera is good, the display is 1440p, i-it's fast! and has removable battery with quick charge 2.0.

Like, there is no reason for me to do it, really. It would just be consumerism at this point. Fuck you Samsung, stop building such good looking phones.

S8 with all the functionality running stock android with Bixby button being remapable to anything (camera, for one) would be literally perfect.

When i get my Zuk Z2(non-pro) whats the first thing i need to do? I have flashed roms and junk before, but if someone here has already done the leg work on finding the best rom, recovery, root, etc.... junk, id prefer using that rather than trial and erroring(while adding tons of clutter to my google account, since each rom acts as a new phone that cant be removed from the list of other fails iv done with my previous mlais and doogee phone)

Mostly looking for a very minimalist, stable rom. Dont care too much about fancy new gimmiky features(though id like the home button to still work, with the swipe functions. Think i'll keep using it over a navigation bar) so long as the phone does not crash or spazz out.

Got me a Priv, but bought it through Bell like a cuck because I was too cheap to pay $699 unlocked. Now I'm sitting here in the second to last fucking week of April still waiting on the April security update that was released to every unlocked Priv owner early in the month.

I'm actually thinking of dropping it for a KeyOne because I want Nougat, the keyboard is probably going to be better (the one on the Priv is nowhere near as good as the one on my Classic) and it will probably run a LOT cooler and get better battery life (but I haven't been too disappointed with the Priv in that regard).

the reason i'd rather have real buttons is because the software buttons take up screen space, but if i'm going to have software buttons i'd rather have a phone with a higher screen to body ratio, are there any other phones without real buttons that are recommended instead?

It doesn't have a physical button, I'm going to assume his "kinda" was referring to the fingerprint reader which is located where a physical home button normally would be.

It is a real button, but you navigate with gestures (like swiping to the right from the button to go back, like the S8 does). When you don't like it you can also enable onscreen buttons which are completely optional. I wouldn't tho, cause I hate onscreen buttons as well

(US/CAN) I'm looking for a decent phone in the $250-350 range.
I don't give a fuck about cameras, just decent speed, 4G LTE capability (my current burner only does 3g), and aesthetics.

its the EXACT same setup the Zuk Z2 has... which leads me to ask the obvious: Why not just get a fucking Z2? Its cheaper, and the hardware is SIGNIFICANTLY better. They're both made by lenovo.

The onyl sticking point with the Z2 is its 4g support isnt as wide, and you'll probably want to put a custom rom on it asap. If you plan on putting a custom rom on the moto G5, why not just leap-frog it and use the Z2 instead?

(I just got my Z2 today. I'm really happy with it. Waiting till i get TWRP and a custom rom on it before i move over to it tho)

Should I go for the LG G6 or V20? I don't care much for the V20's dac, the second screen, the big size, the camera glass shattering, or the (supposed) burn in. Indeed, i got an included tempered glass on mine and it has white edges because the tempered glass was not curved on the edge, not as horrible as the ones i see with almost 1cm of white edge though, ive only seen 2 tempered glass on amazon so far, and with no reviews, im also reluctant. Locally i found an imak tempered glass with black top and bottom parts, not sure if ill get it, but i noticed a slight visibility of pixel grid on the glass.

Otherwise, it;s a great device for the price i paid for, not as powerful as the Zuk but i''m not much of a gamer so.

Nah, its just the same as everyone else's.(white banggood one)

Problem i am facing so far is 4G isnt getting picked up in my area(It has 2 or the 3 bands rogers uses... And both of the nationwide ones(band 4 and 7) but it only connects to 3G.

I also really dont like the rom, or zenui. I have not looked too hard for a clean/basic rom(all i want is vanilla android with the touch-button support) since i'm waiting till the weekend before i mess around with it. First step is to put TWRP and root on it.

This "muh edges not comfortable" shit needs to go away. S8 is the most comfortable phone I have ever held in my hand, it feels sleek as fuck and looks like it.

The miniscule glare is not an issue at all, and the edges aren't as sharp as previously. No issues with hitting shit with my palm either.

The single worst thing about s8 is not even the fingerprint which you get used to, not even touch wizz which is still shit but better than it used to be.

It's the fucking bixby button. It's placed in such a way where I always hit it. It takes some time to load and even opens up if the phone is locked. I wish i could just pull the fucking thing out.
>>
>>59996109
idk i've yet to hit it accidentally but then again I don't fiddle with the volume controls

Custom roms are great and all but fuck having to clean flash updates all the damn time.

Usually it happens just as I've gotten myself settled into the new rom and everything is in the right place and I got all the apps I want and then an update drops which requires a clean flash leaving me to get intimate with titanium backup again. Drives me up the wall.

>This "muh edges not comfortable" shit needs to go away.
Where am I supposed to grab the phone if I want to take a photo? Yeah, of course, by the sides, but what if I accidentally touch the front, that may fuck something up. I want a bezel where I can place my fingers. I hate it when I need to keep by fingers off the front of the phone.

I've used different phones, the ones with either big bezels or big cases were more comfortable for me. Touch-sensitive buttons are as big a sin as no bezel, tho - those also take up grab area.

I don't demand everyone to agree with me, I'll even go as far as calling myself particularly clumsy (I wouldn't give a shit if phones were comfortable to me, but I legit can't count the times when I've missed a photo or done something else on accident due to having tiny bezel on a thing phone)

If the phone is thicc, that helps as well.

These kinds of phones are my favourite designs desu

You're probably all gone by now, but...

I got mine in December and at that time the custom ROM's were all pretty crap, so I went with the Indian ROM.
It has pajeet and the English languages and at the moment it's at Android 6, with the official update (OTA even in Europe, with no VPN needed) to Nougat coming in May.

I think it had pretty much no bloatware and working google services.

The Chinese ROM is already at Nougat but I read that it doesn't support Google shit and I didn't bother with it. Also it needs VPN for updates.

Maybe I'll try Lineage OS in the future, but for now I will wait for the Indian Nougat. It should bring minor camera improvements with manual mode, better battery (with Doze and shit, but I already get two days easy with 3-4h SOT) and the ability to assign different fingerprints to different apps.

OK nerds here's my deal. Currently on Sprint in the US. I HAD a Galaxy S6 that I broke. Right now I'm using my old Moto X. A week from tomorrow my contract with Sprint ends and I wanna go to Verizon.

Talk to me about using an open GSM phone on Verizon. I'm interested in owning the phone outright. I've read that by doing this, I wont have to deal with bloatware.

Recommend me a good android phone that I can use on Verizon's network. I'm interested in a small screen and I dont want a phone that has the curved screen edge like the new S8. My new phone will be in a rubber case. I'm leaning towards the Galaxy S7.

It's like trying to find a unicorn. The only one that manages to fit the requirements seems to be LG G5.

Do you truly need a removable battery and SD slot?
>>
Bought a moto G4, the normal edition, a couple days ago and I noticed that the charging takes forever. For instance it took nearly an hour to go from 35 to 53%. I don't think that's normal.

I'm not a big fan of the obsolescence meme.
SD card I need because I have quite a bit of video and audio on it.

Though my current budget phone still does it's job somewhat well. Maybe I'll just wait if the stars align one day and a miracle phone manifests itself into existence.

Is now a good time to buy an S7?

Any tip for rooting a Galaxy S7 ?
I want to try if I can have fun with it of if I should get an S8.

I have one. The battery life is simply out of this world. Got almost 12 hours of SOT on my first day with it, and that included mobile browsing, hours of battery hogs like pokemon go, gps always on and brightness at 60%. Would not trade this for any of this 600+ dollars overpriced meme crap that can't get through the day without a powerbank being sold for 600+ bucks ever.
>>
What's the realistic timeline we can expect Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 to come out?

I really want to buy the first one but if the 2 comes out a couple months later and it's actually 100% screen buyer's remorse is gonna hit me like a truck.

Is Doogee actually good or just a meme?

Marshmallow with Xposed and Magisk modules or stock Nougat?

My s5 got completely fucked up and I had to go get this $40 phone as a temporary replacement. This thing is slow as fuck when typing into a text box and the battery kind of sucks ass when charging. I like the keyboard though
Any recommendations on what to get? I live in the US and I have a budget of $100 to $200. Carrier is at&t I would prefer a phone that's a decent speed with features like removable battery or decent storage while also being fairly sturdy. I'm considering just getting another s5
>>
>>60003744
Moto G4 Play or Moto G5, the G5 is a fair bit more expensive and specs wise it isn't too much of an upgrade, same everything but it now has a fingerprint scanner, the downside is that it's hella ugly.

I got a Galaxy J5 (2015) for free. The battery life of it is just the best I have ever seen on a smartphone. About 5 days on standby and 6 hours SOT.
>>
>>60003861
Not sure if you're aware, but Samsung phones have the best battery life of any cell phones that aren't being sold on the basis of long battery life like the Droid Turbo

>>
>>60003925
That could be true. The battery life was worse when it ran Touch crap - 1 day standby tops. People in my area that have Samsung phones use the stock bloated rom - All of them have quick battery draining or failing batteries after a year of usage.
>>
>>60004042
>shitty service
what does this mean? what kind of service do you get from a phone manufacturer?
>>
>>60004042
>MUH SPEED

Literally an irrelevant metric on anything medium and high tier for years now. But yeah, gotta go for MAXIMUM SPEED DUDE GOTTA SAVE THOSE 0.001 SECONDS while the iphone can't even get you through the day due to its garbage battery.

>>
>>60004163
what do you mean customer service? how do you come in contact with the phone manufacturer? like if you call them and ask for help how to use android? if I had a problem with the hardware I'd take it to the store that I bought it from and if I had a problem with software I'd ask the internet, cant imagine how you would get in a situation whwre you're serviced by the manufacturer
>>
>>60004163
>what android phone does

All of those in that video for example. Xiaomi phones easily last through two days, even more, since they most of them boast 4100+ mah batteries.

I'd recommend the usual redmi 4 pro or redmi 3 pro for their amazing 10+ hours of SOT, but since you're one of those people who think there is such a thing as a "chink phone" when all phones are chink phones by definition, then I'm not even gonna bother.

I don't understand people who insist on removable battery as if they're stuck in early 2010s. A power bank does the same job and is far more practical because you can use on other devices. Have you cunts never heard of Quick Charge?
>>
>>60004409
It's not about changing for more power, it's about being able to replace it when it goes bad because of age.

>>
>>60004457
You can, if you're not a typical consume afraid of opening their phone. Most people would rather buy another $650+ phone anyway, rather than, buy a new battery, or god forbid, pay someone $50+ to replace it for them.

and carrying around a second battery? Something a very niche market cares about.

It's obvious why is not prioritized over the "premium" glass or aluminum back.
>>
>>60005622
to be fair, the batteries don't go bad that quickly

even when replaceable batteries were in almost every phone, I can't remember needing to replace it on many handsets

phones are pretty likely to break before their battery desu, especially in the use of clumsy, partying normies

it is still ridiculous how many phones don't allow it
