Been an ISP tech for almost 10years now.

Bored at work, not that many call.
Do you have any questions regarding routers, protocols or basic client interaction?

>Which ISP?
Not gonna tell but European /g/entilshommes can guess.
>>
>>59983865
>Which ISP?
ça commence par "o" et ça finit par "range", n'est-ce pas?
>>
Do you use Mikrotik? If yes, I would have a few questions.
>>
What languages were used?
>>
>>59983879
Holy shit you discovered my secret.
A-Are you hacking me?

(Shit clients ask you all the time when you SSH into their PBX and tell them the names they assigned to their equipment)

>>59983889
Nope.

>>59983897
Asterisk modding runs on Lua based

For the firmwares, not sure, i'm not dev.
>>
Baguettefag here, about to rent a big flat with 4 other roomates, said flat is in a zone supposedly covered with Orange FTTH, and one of my roomates absolutely wants the flat to use it, because apparently its super duper fast.

On the other hand, I have been brainwashed to be a Freedrone for a few years now, and I would like to know if there is any chance to get the kind of speed Orange has with a freebox, considering that Free has little to no cabling of their own, and uses yours
>>
>>59984132
I'm on the free trend for the mobile and numericable (now bought by sfr) for internets and haven't changed yet.

But to answer your question, as soon as I move and see I'm eligible to FTTH, I'll get it with Orange. It's a bit more expensive than others but the 500/500 is solid af.
The techs who are developing the FTTH network are pretty good for once and it hasn't yet been delocalised to Romania and Morocco.

If you have the choice, it's not even a choice, your roommate is right.
>>
Can you see what sites and what pages on those sites we visit even when we use https?

Do you store data on clients? What kind of data?
>>
are you Indian? what do you need to work at a place like that?
>>
>>59983865
Can you bump my speed to 10Gbps?
>>
>>59984207
Digging, yeah, on a oneaccess (business routers) for instance, a simple show ip dns-proxy cache gives me a real time view of what you're watching if you use the integrated DNS (90% of clients)

Other people "above me" have other tools that datamine further but not sure how. Just bridge your shit and you'll be sort of ok.

Storing at my level is client nfo, names, addresses, payment nfo, cell numbers, phone logs, SMTP logs.

Sip logs and SMTP logs are somewhere but not sure where. Have to send a ticket to Romania to get them.

>>59984264
French. Still not moved abroad since I deal with small businesses. Residential (normal connections like yours and mine) get their support in Morocco, Tunisia and other shitholes.
Same for the English speaking line, used to be somewhere in France and now they moved it to Africa.

Official reason: "We want everything in developing areas". Real reason is obviously money. Engineers are paid 1.5k and normal techs are minimal wage in the country they're in.

>>59984273
Probably not. Everything is set for the automation to put you on the highest possible speed if you're eligible.
>>
>>59983865
You changed default router firmware?
>basic client interaction
How do you explain tech illiterate people it's not your personal fault something is not working on some site?
>>
>>59984454
If I have 100Mbps on the contract could you set it up?
>>
>>59984207
>Can you see what sites and what pages on those sites we visit even when we use https?
Not OP, but: when you use HTTPS, network operators can usually (not perfectly, but close enough) tell what sites you are on -- google versus facebook versus 4chan -- but they can't see what specific pages you are looking at. There are ways to gain some rough indication, but no details.
>>
>>59984454
I use OpenNIC so I guess I'm good then.
>>
>>59983865
like poo?
>>
Have you ever had to install and/or configure anything?
>>
>>59984494
Nope, only commercial services can change speeds on FTTH. DSL I can switch you all you want though.

>>59984459
You can't use other firmwares or half the shit won't work. TV, sip and h323 are all closed in afaik

I can't. Clients are often retarded and are sure
1.that you personally don't want their shit to work
2.that you personally don't want to find a quicker intervention on site and that if you pressure or threaten me, you'll get a quicker fix
3.that "let me talk to your manager" will change anything to the situation.

Misanthropy is a skill you master after a few years.

my mum and other tech illiterate retired people are involved in the local section of a political party
their router stopped working so they asked me to contact customer support, which i did being the helpful bitch boy that i am

>press buttons to get call directed to an actual person
> - hi, customer support how can i help ?
> - router is ded
> - looks like it hasn't been powered on for 6 month, box couldn't update itself. you'll have to get it replaced

>mfw i find out they kept it unplugged for months to "spare energy", only to have to trash an otherwise perfectly good box
turned out afterwards the cable simply had been cut tho

i can only imagine how much retarded shit you probably have to handle while working on tech support, i hope you keep your sanity

otherwise what can you tell us about router's firmware update system
is it possible to use custom firmware without having having everything go to shit due to lack of updates somehow ?
>>
>>59984600
PBXs yeah. Funsies.
VPNs I hate because when it works I dunno why and when it doesn't I dunno why.
Outlooks and shit, basic stuff sometimes.

If you don't use your own software how do you speed things up? Ticking options in Cisco©™ router?
Ever get a call from somebody with real, technical, not obvious to solve problem?
>>
>>59984732
Le quoi? :^)

>>59984819
Lost sanity the first year.
Fucking with the firmwares is a bad idea. Updates are obscure and I still have no idea who makes the edits and fixes.
Main update based problems are either ppl who cut them off or redirect some ports that prevent updates, depends according to boxes.
The biggest update was last year to change all the admin:admin to admin:serial number.

60% of the pool is still admin:admin.

Main intrusions and PBX hacking that follow are from China and countries like Zimbabwe.
>>
>>59984925
>60% of the pool is still admin:admin.
Is it not easy to randomise it and keep a list somewhere?
>>
>>59984844
Real problems are rare and we're actually happy when they come up. But usually it has shitty solutions.

Funniest I got was the client's neighbors DVD player that everytime the neighbors used ended up disconnecting the DSL router of the client. We still don't know why.

Usual fun is the wife/ex wife calling because husband/ex husband changes SSID to "sale pute" (dirty whore) and stuff like that.

We don't use Cisco but sagemcom and oneaccess stuff has ticking solving most of the time yeah. The times we have to command in is rare and is usually when someone wants the hardware to do stuff it's not supposed to.
>>
>>59985004
So you've been working for 10 years without any advancement? Like you don't have access to configure the Border routers/configure iBGP/AS-AS protocols? Are you an alcoholic? Why haven't you advanced?
>>
>>59984925
>60% of the pool is still admin:admin.
how is this possible, did 60% of users disable router updates somehow ?
>>
How did you get your job?
>>
>>59984957
And get shitloads of calls of whining cunts "you changed my password I'm going to sue you that never works I pay too much and i hate your guts"

The call I just received is perfect example.

Advertising agency, says having qos VoIP problems.
Cunt called once in 2015 and I tell her we're gonna have to analyze the line, see the CRC and all that shit. She tells me "no send me someone tomorrow or I change ISP"
Whatev's bitch, have someone come in, ask 150€ and not being able to fix shit because we don't know what's wrong. They don't want tech support, they want magic.
>>
>>59983865
what is a router?

as in, if i have to build one from scratch, what do i need to do?
>>
What's the policy on mobile tethring ?
I remember having isp pages randomly pop up in browser telling me to subscribe to some tethering option whenever i tried to use my phone as access point and having to use some 3rd party app to not be bothered
>>
>>59983865
What equipment are you using for the P routers?

We have ASRs 9Ks for PE and CRSs 4 and 8 for Ps depending on the area.

would like to get some feedback on Junipers Ts
>>
>>59985055
They hate it when you want to do something more, there are almost no opening inside.

You're not paid more if you do more complicated stuff so for years I stayed at the base so I didn't have to get tired for base shekels.
Also I did start drinking and taking pills with the job. You can't go on without help or you go crazy.

>>59985088
Port redirect is hell. They all do it and have no idea what they're doing. Mainly because of banks asking them for the card payment terminals.

>>59985139
When I was a uni student I applied for part time. Then I dropped out and it was easy money with low effort. Low easy money though. But I'm lazy af so I didn't search anything else.
Nobody here is here by choice.
>>
What does your job entail?
>>
>>59985201
I suck at hardware part desu, i would prolly say wrong shit if i guessed.

>>59985226
Half is proprietary. Sagemcom and oneaccess routers, dunno the hardware specs.

>>59985207
I hate mobile and TV support.
No rules on tethering I know of though, weird.
>>
>>59985373
>No rules on tethering I know of though, weird.
idk it was like 2-3 years ago

do you know of any offer or other isp providing internet access without tv nor a phone line ?
i don't use any of these and would like to spare muh sheckels, tho i guess it wouldn't make sense since phone and tv use the same infrastructure as internet right ?
>>
>>59985337
Basically telling people to wait or that they're retarded, help them conf their pbx, do it for them, and send tech on sites.

Most of the time it's IT crowd tier. Turn it off and on again.

It's repetitive, boring, and you the worst part is that you have to follow a guideline with preset mines and phrases made by marketeers who never had to call an ISP tech themselves. They basically want you to breathe, eat and fap thinking about the brand and they want you to do that with the client on the line.
Everything we say is randomly recorded and evaluated.
>>
>>59983865
Give me the quick gestalt on what I should be doing with my router, the ISP owns it but I'm sure there's a way to configure it properly for security reasons.
>>
>>59985373
>I suck at hardware part desu, i would prolly say wrong shit if i guessed.

then wtf do you know?
>>
>>59985055
>tfw I'm a firewall admin and even I have to do stuff like this occasionally
>>
>>59985475
Yeah I'm like you.
Pretty much everything is multiservices now.
Even if you don't use it, you pay for it.

Or as they say, you pay for the basics and "the extra services are free of charge". It's bullshit, nothing is free.

Example: you want us to TeamViewer and change your home page on IE?
Ok. 29€. Used to be 49.
>>
>>59983865
Do you guys know the MAC addresses of users machines behind their home routers?
>>
>>59985563
If you knew how the internet worked you'd know the answer to this question
>>
>>59985574
I know in theory but there seems to be ways around everything.
>>
Is there any difference between (FTTH) Sosh and Orange in regards to the quality of service provided ?

Also, is it true that the ISPs try to fuck each other at every turn ?
When I got the fiber pulled to my flat, the technician had to wait half an hour to get another [plate or something to wrap the excess fiber length on the floor] assigned, because the one that was supposed to be free according to the RED guys, was the only one actually taken.
>>
>>59985594
If you're using an ISP supplied router/modem combo they most certainly do

Are wireless routers/modems given by ISPs still vulnerable to a reaver WPS-attack, or do they know how to lock you out if you start bruteforcing it?
>>
I live in a dorm and internet is part of the rent.
However its very shitty. I think the problem is there are too many clients and the modem messes up assigning them all ip adresses. Will connecting with a cable fix this for me? What else can I do to fix?
>>
>>59985675
Sosh is pretty much the internal version of Free inside Orange, with no support.

Not only ISP fuck each other but ISP branches fuck each other as well. Like sfr and red or orange and open or orange and orange business.

Everybody hates everybody.

>>59983865

MAC based lock out from what I noticed. 30 minutes to 2 hours and it's logged somewhere in the router for the security guys to check. No idea who or where these guys are. Kinda wish.

1. What could cause speed lost on FTTH?
I have the 100Mb/s plan, and I had a solid 105/108. But since few months, I can't get anything faster than 85/60 Mb/s at best.

2. What could justify that you can't change the DNS address on the Livebox?
>>
>>59989137
Not OP, but

1. Oversubscription and new customers in your area that you share the uplink with.
For example, we oversubscribe our few private FTTH customers because we gamble that they will never max out their bandwidth all at the same time. This means that if it's the world cup and Germany is in the finale and everyone is streaming it, they're gonna have a bad time.

2. We ourselves don't lock it down, but I can imagine that your ISP issued DNS server has some *special* features that they don't want you to circumvent, like caching to reduce the load on the network and deliver faster responses for you or logging your requests for midgetamputeeporn.biz
