Press F to pay respects to my F91, as I got my Seiko yesterday

so to all of you who were like me, constantly browsing these threads but didn't have a watch - here is some legitimate advice. It is worth it to drop a few hundred on a very nice automatic and simply never buy another watch again. Don't do what I do and cheap out and get the cheapest option available, as although there isn't exactly anything WRONG with the Snk803 I have, it was not satisfying at all.

It was definitely worth it to have shelled out more and had something that I would have taken actual pride and joy in, rather than going with the bare minimum here as you can see.

Besides my mentioning that one should not go all-out cheap, one also should not spend over $350 on a watch, $400 is pushing it. The definition of the word luxury (depending on which dictionary you use of course) is "something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary" - You can still get a nice watch within the $100 to $400 range, that will look and feel good, and it also won't be so expensive that you would fall into worry over it, or into the slippery slope of diminishing returns.

>tl;dr this gets the job done, but it would have been worth it to buy something nicer, I've found myself not displeased, but indifferent to it on day one - because I'm aware I very well could have gotten a better watch

>>59983212
I like it too, but it just wasn't what I thought it would be

I realized I would have preferred something now with a more classic look, and probably just time markers and the hands with a small branding, think dressy looking

What triggered me was when I looked at the circle-tipped dashes, and saw that they looked a bit cheap when you really focus on it. I think a dress watch with actual solid markers rather than a painted dial would have been a better fit for me

shrug/10
its not horrible by any means! I do like it, I just think I should have chosen something more to my tastes that I didn't know I had yet

it was clear from his post he was interested in lug geometry, not bezel-related optical illusions. you can tell because he specifically mentioned the lug-to-lug distance.

>dauphine hands

I don't know how or why that style of hands have that name, nor do I know for that matter why "Louis XIV" hands are so-named, in the sense that I can't identify a particular watch with a particular noblemen. I suspect that is lost in history.

Dauphine, though, is the feminine form of "dauphin" in French and refers to the wife of a dauphin. Here's what I do know about "dauphin":

NOUN: 1. The eldest son of the king of France from 1349 to
1830. 2. Used as a title for such a nobleman.

ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, from Old French, title of the lords of Dauphiné, from Dalphin, Dalfin, a surname, from dalfin, dolphin (from the device on the family's coat of arms).
Middle English, from Old French daulfin, blend of daufin and Old Provençal dalfin, both from Medieval Latin *dalfinus, from Latin delph nus, from Greek delph s, delph n-, from delphus, womb (from its shape).

If it wasn't $800 for a basic as fuck watch it would sell so fast.

At that price you're saying:

No thanks I don't want a JDM Seiko and spend the other half on hookers
No thanks I don't want a vintage Omega
No thanks I don't want to save a bit more and get a Speedmaster

It's a good watch but there's so many things better than it for that price.
>>
>>59983737
>comparing used to new
>comparing a chrono to a dress watch
The "JDM Seiko" comparison might hold some weight if you'd specify a model, but as it stands you're just not maing any sense.
>>
>>59983737

not the guy you are replying to, and not interested in the watch... but new watches really are not direct competitors with vintage, and the other two things you listed are explicitly different prices.

i get your point, but you set yourself up to compare it to other new watches around the same price and then just... didn't. all told, not such a great post, 3/10, might read again once but not twice.
>>
>>59983791
I'm saying if you have $800 in your hands there are many better watches to buy before you buy that.

When designing a product you need to think carefully at the price point you're placing it at because of this.

Except "better" doesn't really mean much. Are there any objectively better watches? Because that doesn't mean anything.
>>
>>59983898
I'd say a watch from a known Swiss or Japanese company would be objectively better than a Chinese watch from an unknown and untested company.

The Chinese watch isn't going to hold any value as no one has heard of the brand before.

It's not a bad watch, but it needs to cost $300.

>>
>>59983161

This guy buys one watch and suddenly he's an expert on the frugality of watch purchasing. You learn what you like by owning watches. I sold two divers because they were so redundant. I learned that I didn't like them anymore now that I had more watches that I liked better. I started out with a shitty timex, moved onto a quartz Seiko, then moved onto an Invicta 8926ob, then more Seikos and orient, etc.
>>
>>59984641
0 scratches. But yeah most of the current-era watches apart from Japanese, Rolex, Vostok, and some microbrands are absolute dogshit.
>>
>>59984681
He's right though. It's better to buy 1 £2000 watch every 10 years than 5 £400 watches every 2 years.
>>
>>59984641
I don't think so

The only new watch I would ever buy would be a steel Rolex sub desu. I would go to an AD in a tax free state like Delaware, offer to pay cash for a small discount and fuck off.

Prices between used and new Rolexes are like 1k-2k and with a new Rolex I'd have the piece of mind it's legit and under warranty and all that jazz. Difficult to tell fakes or even small, minute fake parts inside to a nonprofessional like myself on a piece that's been counterfeited so much like a sub

I agree with you that manual wind is neat, especially for thin watches, but clearly most people are ready to give up millimeters of thickness to get rid of the massive headache of winding a watch.

It becomes a habit. Instead of playing with your phone you can wind your watch. It doesn't take long.

>>
>>59985369
Oh. Then the reason most cheap watches are automatics is because they use the same mass-produced movements, and the reason those movements are auto is that there are more people who won't buy a manual wind watch than people who won't buy an automatic.
>>

Swatch is overpriced garbage and so is virtually every brand they own. Their entire business model is based on using marketing to huckster status seeking normies.

You shouldn't support swatch in any instance as we don't want to give any money to companies with jewish business practices.

If you must but swatch there are two cool brands imo, Omega and Breguet and you only should buy used as to not give them any more money (also resale is shocking, especially on Breguet)

If you're talking cheap watches just get a Seiko mate they are the creme de la meme at the under 1000 price point. Orient, Vostok and Seagull, even casio would be other acceptable choices. Or go vintage for class factor

>We have the answer: It’s a Swatch, a simple plastic timepiece that retails in the ballpark of $100. In fact, the executive has several of them—including a black one for formal events.

>The list of power players who sport Swatches goes on: Tony Blair has one, as does French president Francois Hollande. U.K. hedge fund trader Chris Hohn has had a black one for years. AllianceBernstein CEO Peter Kraus is a fan of the brand. Even the boss of luxury watch maker Patek Phillipe reportedly wears one while skiing.

Pretty common topic on WUS. Not quite sure why. People know what they can afford or not, and make decisions on an individual level. Everyone's circumstances are different.
Besides, the question is way too ambiguous... What is a high-end watch - some may say $200+, $1K+, $5K+, $10K+, $20K+, $100K+ - depends on who is being asked and what their collection looks like.

What is wealthy or what is middle-class? There are some who barely make it paycheck-to-paycheck and consider themselves middle-class, there are some living in a huge house with several luxury cars in garage who consider themselves middle class.
Are we speaking wealth as in assets or income? Income can be meaningless if one is retired with huge assets.
Where does one live (NYC cost of living <> FL cost of living)? What family obligations does one have (student loans, kids, college tuition, wife working or not, parents and family being supported or not)?

There are people who buy watches on credit and go deep into debt or dip into savings to get a watch (or a car, or any luxury good), while others will only use disposable income.
There are those who want to show off, those who have to project a certain image, those who are simply passionate about watches, and many other permutations.
There are people who are not wealthy, but may be gifted a nice watch by their family or friends.

Bottom line, the only meaningful answer I can offer - it is an individual choice. I do think luxuries are primarily for those who can afford them. But on the other hand - you only live once, so if even if a person if not "wealthy" but one is passionate about watches, saves specifically for the purchase and knows what they are getting into - more power to them. That's the beauty of freedom - individual choice above all else (as long as one bears all consequences of their choices).

It's amazing the kind of resale value pretty much ALL other brands have besides Rolex and Patek, and the former is so far better than the first in this regard I only mention the latter because it seems to be the only on that sorta comes close.

Brands like Girad Perregaux, Parmigiani Fleurier et.al., make in-house marvels (though design is subjective) but no one seems to give a shit.

Who's buying this stuff first hand and taking the hit? Especially with solid gold watches; massive hit for the first buyer. Heck, even gold rolex don't do as well as their steel counterparts.

The only Omega Archie recommends is the MOTFM, and yes, you're right, far too much of it is made in China.

Personally, I would never buy an Omega made after Swatch bought them. Before that, Omega was one of the greatest production watchmakers ever.

Ive liked the look of Oris divers for a long time. I just dislike the brand name because it constantly reminds me of Oral B toothbrushes and it sticks out. Thats a nice looking watch.

Their divers, up until this model posted here, have always been somehow "too fat", too rounded.
That being said I liked that compared to their bland recent versions.
The wavy dial rounded divers intrigued me. But I felt as if you had to be fat with massive round ham arms for them to work for you.

Always had a soft spot for Oris; like how they're still independent, and have made now some forays into in-house manufacturing again.

An Oris was the first watch I ever really noticed in regards to movie product placement. That shitty Constantine film, where he slits his wrists at the end gives you a nice close up of an Oris dressy model.

I don't care what race he is, he is the king of the mountain Jews who destroyed the Swiss production watchmaking industry by spearheading the re-orientation of the industry towards using marketing to instill entirely artificial perceptions of quality, fake prestige, and playing upon the desperate desire to acquire social status to trick normies into hilariously overpaying for boring, cheap movements crammed into Chinese made cases.

About to pull the trigger on a Kinetic Tuna- pic related, but I figured I'd ask for alternative recommendations first. Looking to upgrade from a Seiko solar chronograph for daily wear. I'd prefer a dive watch, like a solid chunk of metal on my wrist, ideally a chronograph, metal band, willing to spend a max of $2000. Thoughts?
>>
>>59989783
If you are willing to spend $2,000 you should be getting a Seiko 8rXX chronograph or the upcoming 6rXX 62MAS inspired divers.

Fuck only knows what's occurring with the bezel. Though it is fully lumed, so that's something atleast.

But. BluLume, which makes me moist.

It's almost as if there are two very conflicted design teams, I'd like to imagine that's the case, but probably isn't.
Half of the designs seem to be thoughtfull, but with minor problems, like the Regulatuer, or Titanium 500..
And then you get shit like this fucking 100ATM "Triton" and shit like the Racetimer.
>>
My brother just got an SKX009 (the one on the right in pic).

It looks pretty neat in person, and wtf I love SKX now.

Does the black SKX (007) look boring irl?

Or should I just get the exact same one as my brother?

(I know about modding, but I wouldn't mod right away)

The Ocean Titanium 500 makes me really angry because if they'd not used hands that belong on a flieger instead of a diver I'd of seriously considered one. It is--by MILES--the cheapest ETA 2892-A2 top grade money can buy.

Why can't they just make a Marine 38 with that movement? For fucks sakes.

I bet you also hate the Obris Morgan Explorer for that reason then?

But on the topic of the hands of the Ocean 500, I honestly get what you mean, but I think it really helps with just how bold they are. If they were any thinner than they are I would totally get the hate towards it.

I mean their design rather than size. They are literally instrument hands as would be found on cockpit clocks, that's why Sinn and Damasko use that design of hands on their watches. See pic related.

Those hands have no business being on a diver. Sword hands of the same size would have been fine, but those hands trigger the fuck out of my autism.

No and no.

The Swatch group saved the brand names from extinction, but in actually gutted what make those companies unique and turned them into nothing more than design and marketing departments applied to generic movements slapped into Chinese made cases. The only variety is in the branding of these shitters.

Here is a list of the currently existing watchmakers capable of designing and producing complete watches including movements and escapements on a production basis:

Vostok, Raketa, Orient, Citizen, Seiko, ETA, Nomos, Rolex.

Notably absent from that list are all the brands that risable mountain Jew bought and subsequently gutted.

The bracelet is 100% Chinese made, at the very least. As far as I know, all Omega bracelets are Chinese made now.

omega is notorious for sourcing parts in China and then just assembling them in Switzerland. it's part of why they can sell their hack watches for so cheap compared to Rolex, while still coasting on the pedigree of their name

btw that one (1) receipt was posted three (3) years ago

and thats literally the only receipt ever and the only concrete proof ever shown. could it be that when scanned, it was incorrectly coded to CN instead of CH? they're probably back-to-back in a drop down menu ffs... or something else, idk

again, i am not denying that the bracelets or more parts omega uses COULD have been made/still be made in china, but there's virtually no proof other than speculation posted on forums and archie's channel

at least with the TAG "scandal" when rumors were going around and proofs were shown, TAG finally bit the bullet and admitted it...but literally nothing on Omega as no proof other than a receipt has been provided...one time

why has man gone silent so fast? Answer me!

Look, besides what many people have heard on the rumor mill and what many watchmakers have said, I can tell you that the Omega bracelets I've handled in person (in particular the one on a $4,000 USD Aqua Terra) was a cheap, light, rattly piece of shit comparable to the bracelet on a $300 SARB at best.

The glaringly poor manufacturing and finishing quality of the bracelet appears to corroborate the rampant rumors and hearsay evidence that the bracelets are made entirely in China.
>>
>>59993374
anecdotal 'evidence' passes off as truth smfh.

also
>what many watchmakers have said
like who? has any respectable watchmaker come out - even online - and said they suspect omega uses chinese parts? because the only 'watchmakers' ive seen say omega uses chinese parts are in the same threads where a random said, 'oh yeah m8 this one watchmaker i know suspects that x part comes from china'

why even regurgitate such garbage?

i really do hate this shit, because i can tell you that the bracelet on my MOTFM is most certainly not ratty or cheap-feeling in the least bit.

could the bracelet have been made in china? maybe! but i really dont know, so i dont think its fair or even ethical to be saying these kinds of things without proof.

i ask for proof
i dont get it

Seiko can't find parts for my 45 y/o Grand Seiko, but they tried

Just figured I'd post my experience here as there seems to be some growing interesting in Grand Seikos (or perhaps I'm just projecting ). A few weeks ago I bought a lovely 5722-9991 from Takayama Watch, an eBay seller in Japan.

It runs fine, but due to the blemish on the dial and a desire for 100% peace of mind, I sent it into the only Seiko service center in the US (Mahwah, NJ). Mind you, lowly American watchmakers are not allowed to touch Grand Seikos, so Seiko NJ forwards all Grand Seikos to Japan for service. Seiko NJ called and emailed me every step of the way, letting me know that my watch was received, the price, and what timeframe to expect the watch back from Japan (3 months).

Seiko Japan could not find the parts in stock, so a few days later I received a telegram notifying me that there would be a delay. Literally, a telegram! I got a kick out of it.

But alas, today I got a call from a very courteous Seiko NJ rep who informed me that the parts needed for my 45-year-old watch are indeed extinct, and they cannot service it. They are immediately refunding the full $626 charge, which I appreciate. They invested a decent amount of time communicating with me and scoping out my watch, not to mention the cost of shipping to Japan and back, so overall I can't say anything bad about my Seiko experience thus far.
>>
>>59993463

Small detail in GS manuals is that they only guarantee part availability for 10 years post manufacture.

Good luck selling those overpriced Seikos later on
>>
>>59993453
Yes, I'm sure it's a big conspiracy and the masses of anecdotal evidence don't indicate anything. I'm also certain that the bracelet on your MOTFM is dramatically better than the embarrassing piece of garbage on the $4,000 Aqua Terra.

Conversely, can you provide any evidence to corroborate the bracelets being made in Switzerland?
>>
>>59993463
Which parts do you need? You shouldn't even have purchased the watch without being aware of parts availability issues with Grand Seikos made in the 1970s. Also, you should not have bothered to send the watch to Grand Seiko for service. You would be much better off dealing with an independent watchmaker who specializes in vintage watches.

If you can tell me which parts you need, I'll see what I can do about finding the parts or a donor movement for you.
>>
>>59993596
>Yes, I'm sure it's a big conspiracy and the masses of anecdotal evidence don't indicate anything.

yes youre right, it absolutely doesnt. how many gigs of reptilian people and bildebrug videos are there on youtube? are those true too?

>I'm also certain that the bracelet on your MOTFM is dramatically better than the embarrassing piece of garbage on the $4,000 Aqua Terra.

what are you insinuating here? ive never handled an aqua terra so i dont know. im just sayying mine looks pretty good and it isnt ratty as some shitters ive handled in, say, the mall, or something

>Conversely, can you provide any evidence to corroborate the bracelets being made in Switzerland?
What? are you serious guy? the burden of proof does not lay on me. youre the one saying omega uses chinese parts without any proof

do you even realise your own density? it's ok to stop posting, because without proof on your part, you're the one in the wrong here

Except for the only piece of objective evidence on the matter supporting the position that Omega bracelets are made in China, in addition to the anecdotal evidence.

Meanwhile, the counter position that they are made in Switzerland has zero evidence at all to support it, and the above evidence to overcome.
