>doesn't let you turn off your computer until it downloads and installs updates
>some of these updates can take 30-60 minutes to download and install
Modern Windows everyone.

Did Microsoft ever consider that a reboot might be needed to be performed quickly or something? Why does Windows not ask my permission before doing this shit? I popped into my Windows system to get a music file and ended up having to wait 30+ minutes just to turn the computer off.

w-what happens if you try to unplug it, d-does it fight you?
>>
Use Alt+F4. You'll have options to reboot and shut down without installing updates
>>
>>59975300
alt f4
>>
>>59975300
>some of these updates can take 30-60 minutes to download and install
Time to get off the 5400 RPM HDD, 4 GB RAM and dual core celery CPU.
>>
>>59975300
Yea nah. You're a cunt. Windows 10 is indeed garbage, but you can mitigate the trash a bit. You can make it so updates download automatically but don't install without you doing it yourself. (I.e. no surprise shutdowns)

And if your updates are taking so long, it's because your system a shit.
>>
>>59976887
Some of us don't have any option to get off of complete shit internet unless we move. It's got little to do with specs and everything to do with shitty US internet speeds in monopolized areas.
>>
>complains about win 10
>has no idea what a nightmare win98 was

ignorance is bliss
>>
>>59976940
>no surprise shutdowns
you're telling me i can leave my laptop with Windows 10 and lots of documents and windows open, leave it for a week and everything will still be open? you need to teach me senpai, because that is literally the reason i can't use Windows 10

Again. Set your updates so it doesn't auto restart. It'll download in the background but won't do shit until you restart or shutdown
>>
>>59977059
But if the update doesn't finish downloading in the background before you turn your computer off, it will halt the shutdown until it finishes. This is the problem I'm talking about.
>>
>>59977027
So please tell me then, why it's Windows' fault that your internet connection is fucking garbage?
>>
>>59977098
Why does the most popular OS on Earth require a primo internet connection when the global average internet speed is only 5Mb/s?
>>
>>59977056
Just grabbed the first link. Simple as telling Windows update to notify you, not do it automatically. There are also registry and group policy work arounds.
>>
What the fuck is wrong with you people? How do you idiots manage to fuck up Windows Update of all things?

I set my active hours to the time from when I get home from work to sometime in the morning where I'm never awake, and I've never had a problem. I've never once been interrupted while I was using my PC, because the updates always install while I'm at work and I always come home to a freshly updated PC.
>>
>>59977151
I don't leave my shit on overnight and don't want to lose my desktop randomly in the middle of the day.
>>
>>59977164
Furthermore I only use Windows occasionally, so whenever I do boot it, there are always countless fucking updates waiting to be installed which takes fucking forever even if, as I mentioned in the OP, I just want to pop in and use a program quickly, or retrieve a file.

Windows also resets my fucking update settings constantly for no reason, I have it set not to auto-download or auto-install anything yet it does it almost every single time I boot the OS, presumably because it realizes I'm behind by like 10,000 updates and freaks out.
>>
>>59977206
>Furthermore I only use Windows occasionally
Stop fucking dual-booting then. There's literally no reason not to run Windows full time and and just use a Virtual Machine when you need Linux.

I know, there's a very good reason why you don't do this already. It's because that eventually with this setup, you stop actually using the virtual machine for anything except running nginx or whatever in the background because desktop linux is fucking garbagio in the bellagio and always will be.

This is well trodden ground. The unabashed idealism of figuring out that there's a free *NIX operating system, transitioning to begrudgingly dual-booting, transitioning to the pragmatism of virtualization, with the final resignation of simply giving up.

We've all been there before. It's okay. You can stop fighting anytime you want. Come on home.
