How would you sell Gnu/Linux to normies?

I've been trying to do this lately but they don't seem to give much of a hoot about the primary selling points.

It doesn't spy on you, unlike Windows.
Their response: "So? Everyone spies on everyone these days it's impossible to maintain privacy and I don't care if the nsa knows what porn I watch"

It is free and opensource.
their response: "Who cares Windows came with my laptop it's free too"

It is more customizable
Their response: "I don't want to learn all this new hard stuff!"

It is more secure
Their response: "but I use [antivirus software]!"

How do I retort?

too late anon, she's too far gone. start with red pills in politics
>>
>>59964928
>it's impossible to maintain privacy
Well, it's true unless you go full-autismo like rms.
>>
>>59964928
there are only two ways to sell anything.

make it trendy (or cool/new/fun/other popular culture buzzwords.
see macbooks or alienware. both more expensive than they should be and both are popular.

or

make it cheap.
see chromebooks and (android) cellphones. both are varying levels of cheap. the ones that arent tend to fall in to the above category instead.

chromeOS and android are both linux. so you can see it already works.
>>
>>59964994
It is true, but it's not a justification to give it up entirely.

>>59965001
It feels more herd mentality.

If we could get Brittney Spears or Kim Kardashian to use Gnu/Linux on her THINKPAD™ we could make a major stride.
>>

I wouldn't. I don't feel the need to push my hobbies onto other people, and if they also don't work in tech, then they don't need it.
>>
>>59964928
>How would you sell Gnu/Linux to normies?

The question is: why would you want to? Normies ruin every good thing.
>>
>>59964928
the best way to sell GNU/Linux to a normie is, set up cinnamon or KDE, some DE with a start menu and let them use it.
>>
>>59965017
As long as you use the plain old internet your choice of OS doesn't really affect your privacy that much.
>>
>>59964928

Don't waste your time trying to convince them.
>>
>>59964928
Privacy(while NSA doesn't care about porn, I don't feel secure with big brother having all my more sensitive information) and antivirus (no need for one at all if you aren't dumb)aside those are all good arguments.

Why making your life harder if all they have to do is shitpost Facebook?
>>

lol

Theres no point until theres a truly universal DE that just WERKZ MANG

It can't be done.
Also, we gonna continue with this GNU/Linux meme? Has it ascended?

See image for details.
>>
Let them go. It's not that you can support those normies 24/7 for free or anything.
>>
>>59965017
Bottom line, we need to advertise Linux on television or the Internet. There's no other way.
>>
>>59964928
>How would you sell Gnu/Linux to normies?
Do not do this. You will become their personal helpdesk. Ask me how I know.
>>
>>59965465
Baby's first DE is the windows clones.
Changing your work style even slightly stimulates your brain, and the novelty of a different desktop paradigm can be good, as long as it doesn't totally break your workflow like Gnome or something.
>>
>>59965481
Tons of shekels are necessary.
>>
>>59965520
Sometimes, you need to give some shillings to earn some shekels.

Internet advertising is probably the best way to go.
>>
>>59964928
you forgot the most important thing

>it breaks and noone can help you because either elitism or no knowledge of the issue
>>
>>59965684
Do normies even use this argument though?
Also false, I always found everything I needed for loonix - SOME online communities are very helpful
>>
>>59965469
Your mouth didn't ascended from corporate dick.
>>
Wait, I thought 2017 was the year of the Linux desktop. What's that? Linux has under 5% share of desktop operating systems?

Did /g/ lie to me again?
>>
With one command line you can update all your softwares.
>>
>>59965733
the normies i talked to used it so i guess yes
and it is not false
since i have issues that i could never find any way to fix it neither in the official nor nonofficial communities

it just speaks to either your luck or expertise that you haven't encountered such problems
>>
You have to be severely autistic to completely switch all your systems to Loonix without having a Windows machine handy.

Most people have just a single system - their laptop, and suggesting them to take a dive into a completely foreign OS and to abandon any and all compatibility with the real world is just reckless and cruel.
>>
>>59965776
Most people don´t use more than their web-browser anyways so there's nothing particularly foreign there
>>
>>59964928
Why do you want normies to use it?
Didn't you have enough with them coming to the Internet and destroying it?
Do you really want the to come to gnu/Linux and shit over it?
>>
>>59965484
For people (like relatives) for whom I'm already the personal helpdesk, I gave them an ultimatum: "I don't use Windows anymore. I'm going to know less and less about it and how to fix it as time goes on. Your choices are to run Linux or go it alone."

either way I win, either they switch (and I have a much easier time of it, because though they ask stupid questions, they don't get malware) or I'm relieved of the responsibility entirely.
>>
>>59965017
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Herd mentality, is in fact, GNU/Herd mentality, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Herd mentality. Herd mentality is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Herd mentality", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Herd mentality, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Herd mentality is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Herd mentality is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Herd mentality added, or GNU/Herd mentality. All the so-called "Herd mentality" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Herd mentality.
>>
>>59965767
I am a loonix nub tho and always felt home and could solve most issues

Dunno, maybe you are talking about a higher level? Why normies need that tho?

>thinkpad breaks and has to be repaired
>take old shitty laptop that's lying around at home for the time
>nobody uses it, because win7 is slow as shit on it, can't even play a video without sounding like it's dying
>install ubuntu
>works like a charm
I agree on not forcing your hobby down someone elses throat. But linux could help to make hardware last longer, and therefore help the environment.
Imagine if everybody was more familiar with linux and would not buy a new laptop every 2 years because the old one died from bloat
>>
>>59965684
ubuntu has pretty good forum support, actually
tell them to backup their data, teach them how to do a clean reinstall and to only install software from the "store" if possible, and you should be good to go
>>
>>59966000
normies need that because it's an essential part of the os
i don't mean a random program not working
i mean the DE breaking after an update
or the gpu doing the same
>>
>>59965776

>>
>>59966061
i at this point doubt that it's about "want" it seems more like noone has a way to fix it
i couldn't even diagnose the problem
if you care to read a short explanation of it

>i set up linux installed the nvidia bumblebee thingie
>everything works
>several days later it stops
>check everything but can't find changes
>reset it and get it to work again
>a restart later it doesn't work anymore
>since then i was unable to get it to work
>>
>>59965684
>it breaks and noone can help you because either elitism or no knowledge of the issue
DING DING DING DING DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER

Your average dumbass can't even muster the effort to Google/Search the most basic of problems and have to go to an IT guy asking how to print or where did their downloaded file go.

...and you want them to fix their own problems on a LINUX OS?
Most people who see a CLI just think welp shits completely fucked
>>
>>59964928

there isn't a normie that exists that ever installed an os
>>
>>59964928
> literally shill for a bad product just because it fits your ideology

1. stop recommending harmful stuff, GNU is disgust and Linux is yuck, openBSD is the future. or at least musl/plan9port/clang/Linux.
2. normies' points are fucking valid. except maybe the spying one. your point is incorrect too - GPL is not truly free. Customization is literally useless. It's not really that much secure either (else you'd use openBSD)

If it can run in Wine, it by proxy can run in Linux, therefore Linux has more software.

What is the phenomenon when you present an argument or idea to someone planting the seed, they disagree at first then it blooms and next time you see them they're parroting the same shit you told them?

You know when they default to dismissal or disagreement & then you can tell that they only came to agree & repeat your conclusion because they could mull it over in their head privately without having to risk anything public like "losing" a debate or having to change their mind on an idea.

It's like when you just do something confidently & people make comments, you just keep going then they eventually come around to the same direction or simply follow you.

What's up with that? Persuasion doesn't seem possible upfront but over time.

Because I don't want to work within the limitations of the Windows operating system?

I mean, you bother with Linux because the operating system is different.

If you took a good long look at Windows and understood how its put together, it's a bloated, ridiculous pile of flaming dogshit.

If I can run a Windows program using emulation in a much more safe, private, stable and customizable system, why would I not?

Winfags just don't realize how many problems they experience with Windows until they stop using it. Rebooting after every change. Rebooting to fix broken things. Fucking around with permissions you are denied by the OS. Schizophrenic design choices like splitting the OS in two with Universal Apps and regular apps. Integrating adware and spyware directly into the build. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Sorry, I replied to you incorrectly.

What you're describing is called learning.
4chan's magic enables the memes to crumble and its users to learn silently and without much accountability.

Over time, a user becomes more mature and says less stupid shit, they transition into becoming an oldfag.

The lifecycle ends with them being addicted to the website and having nothing to do but shepherd retarded newfags and highschoolers into wisdom in a way that has no consequences for them.
>>
Degenerates don't care about Linux because degenerates don't care about society.

They don't care that humanity is spinning its wheels in the same direction on identical proprietary software when we're approaching an energy and resource crisis. "Muh money", and yet the generation of this software is automatable with a concerted effort, or at least a higher level of abstraction is possible.

They don't care that people are being violated by these technologies because it has never happened to them personally. They have no ideals.

They only care about shiny things and getting dopamine in their brains.

The question is not how to get normies to care, the question is how to get rid of normies.

Can you teach teachers how to manage all school work on Linux for/with the kids?
>>
My pitch has been
>You're in college and broke. You don't have money to afford toiletries, let alone a computer. Walking to libraries/labs late at night is a bitch and an invitation to get mugged. Find the cheapest working laptop you can, no matter how awful the specs. Take a 10 year old donation missing a hard drive if it's offered. I will get it working for you with a free, undemanding OS that supports internet browsing and a word processor. Get your schoolwork done in the comfort of your room and worry about one fewer thing in life.

I supply the machine when I have a spare, too. People in real need give a hoot when you're empathetic and helpful.
