What's the point? It's going to merge anyway sooner or later
>>

it means you have to go through about:config and disable all of mozilla's stupid bullshit once a year instead of once every six weeks.
>>
>>59959132
What did you have to disable recently?
>>
>Still using Firefox

>>
>>59959155
Nothing, since I use ESR. (Actually, Debian is still on 45.8) I also didn't have to investigate any broken addons. It's nice.
>>
>>59959189
Neither did I, that's why I asked you. Well whatever
>>
Alright, let's get this over with.

>New themes, a few gimmicks
Don't use, don't care.

>New permission control center
Chrome has had this for a long time.

>Windows 7+ users on 64-bit OS can select 32-bit or 64-bit versions in the stub installer
Why would you even want this? Sounds like a gimmick.

>Shortened titles on tabs are faded out instead of using ellipsis for improved readability
Just like in Chrome.

>Media playback on new tabs is blocked until the tab is visible
I think Chrome does this as well, although I'm not quite sure. Anyway, good.

>Support for WebM video with alpha, which allows playing videos with transparent backgrounds
Nice, didn't know WebM supported this.

Overall, a lot of gimmick, niche features, no real reason to update except if you actually use them. This is exactly why browsers like Chrome dominate the market: Chrome is just a browser, staying secure and supporting new features instead of adding gimmicks and autism.
>>
>>59959240
but anon, it does support new features

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Releases/53
>>
>>59959071
I haven't checked the updates in ages. What's the difference between ESR and the normal release?
Still running FF 46 here.
>>
>>59959240
Problem being that Chrome tattles to Google and there's nothing you can do to stop it. It also looks like Chrome and there's nothing you can do to change that.

Firefox is pretty shit these days but at least you can dig around in about:config and turn off the botnet and bullshit.

>>
>Two new 'compact' themes available in Firefox, dark and light, based on the Firefox Developer Edition theme
I remember in 2013 when the Australis UI change was in progress and I was using firefox
I used to edit my XUL to get a dark compact theme and they broke that
They broke XUL and it took them 4 fucking years to achieve something we used to achieve by playing with XUL or downloading a XUL from github

I'm glad they finally did it but the whole thing is deplorable
>>
Does anyone know if Firefox 53 adds back the ability to listen to youtube videos in the background? I had to switch to using newpipe to actually listen to music on youtube while my screen is turned off

>>
>>59959394
there's one of those in each section. The idea is if there's a syntax error in user.js, the browser just throws up its hands and stops parsing it. So having that pref in there lets you look at that setting in about:config, and if there was an error it'll tell you what section the error was in.

No. I just use ff nightly because it's faster than the other release channels, and isn't actually unstable either.

Because you're meant to look through all the stuff in that file and change any options you don't want. Some of the settings will break some sites.

One example. It looks like they changed this now, but the version I got a month or two ago had tls.version.min set to block TLS 1.0. (SSL3 is already blocked, I believe) Turns out I visited two sites regularly that wouldn't negotiate anything higher than that. One is since fixed, the other isn't.

I guess by 57 they'll drop win7 and 8 as well, so the loss of XUL will be totally irrelevant.

Which will be irrelevant for all branches of Firefox next year once WebExtensions is the only extension API on all branches.
>>
>>59965329
Unless they plan to stop fucking with the UI, and adding anti-features like telemetry, pocket, safebrowsing, and so on, then no, there'll still be things you need to disable every version.

Even if you leave all that aside they're enthusiastic about implementing the latest features, lots of which are high-entropy fingerprinting vectors (canvas, webrtc, beacon...), those will need to be turned off.
>>
>>59959045
>The last few characters of shortened tab titles fade out instead of being replaced by ellipses to keep more of the title visible
Good. That has been something that has been bothering me.
With all of my 4chan threads in their own tabs, I only see "(1) /g/ - thre...", which often isn't enough to identify the thread properly.

Here's with the "Compact" them that they're building. There're dark and light modes to.
>>

Yeah they ported the developer edition themes to the new theme APIs. It looks like Mozilla is actually going to incorporate parts of the compact themes into their next design of firefox. The upcoming "photon" theme has a compact mode that reduces padding on elements and makes the back/forward arrows in the toolbar the same height like the small icons mode in firefox <=28

Boy, I'm getting kind of sleepy. Maybe we should all just take a nap.
>>
>>59970765
No version is killing addons. WebExtensions has thousands of developers. Most Firefox' addons have a Chrome version and those that don't are going to be replaced with backed-in features (like TreeStyleTabs), rewritten using the new APIs that Mozilla is developing or just going to be useless anyway since they're changing basically everything in the browser.

The truth is most of the addons don't need the amount of customization XUL gives them.

XUL is also a huge security risk, since they can execute and modify everything Firefox can. So an extension could wipe out your /home/ directory (or root, if you're regarded enough to run a browser as root), download shit, execute other programs, etc. The amount of work Mozilla has to put every time someone wants to upload an add-on to their page is ridiculous. Also, every browser update can break addons.

XUL extensions were a mistake. A expensive one, at that.

What does Firefox have to do to become the #1 browser once again?

How does it defeat the almighty Chrome?
>>
>>59978937
Ive used both. I think FF has better extension support, it's open source and just feels better to me. I also like the layout and aesthetics more.
>>
>>59978995
yeah that's why i use firefox too, last I checked there were some useful add-ons firefox had that chrome doesn't have.

but it seems like firefox will never be on top ever again... well maybe competition is a good thing for everyone.

It needs to embrace more diversity and throw that on the main Mozilla page without any mention of the product they should be pushing in the first place, and not mention Firefox in any obvious place on the website, and have absolutely no call-to-action button to download Firefox in plain sight on their website, just like they're doing now.

There's nothing for world domination quite like confusing the fuck out of everybody who visits your page and doesn't know exactly what they're there to download.

Doesn't have anything to do with hardware acceleration I believe. Your lack of hardware acceleration is probably due to your own stupidity or the driver not being stable

With both browsers using default settings except for the two below for firefox, and using ublock origin with both at default settings, opening the same 120 tabs on both resulted in 4.8GB for chrome and 6.5GB for firefox.

This is the best change of all but it is not turned on by default, you have to make a change in about:config

set it to True

Waterfox consistently crashed on me no matter what I did. I've been using pale meme until a few months ago when it lost support for tree tabs. Now I just use Firefox and mitigate it's horrible bloat ( seriously more than 4 open tabs and it dies, and I am not on a toaster) with auto suspend tab addons.

What does /g/ think of Sleipnir btw? I know it's a chromium-like but I don't see anyone talking about it

The compact themes don't fit with windows 7's aesthetic. I don't get why they're so popular anyway they don't even look good.

The rounded edges on the windows and the transparency don't fit it imo. I also don't like that the new tab button is like its own tab rather than fading into the background. I wish Mozilla would revert firefox back to the 28 theme on windows 7 at least

Is using Nightly as your main browser worth it?
>>
>>59987745
Imo, no. Use stable. Nightly recently broke uB0 (it works now), and I've encountered different UI glitches thoughout the time.
>>
>>59987745
>>59987841
I've used nightly as my main browser for years now, uB0 breaking was about the worst thing that happened in the past year and that was fixed very quickly.

If you want some features that nightly offers right now and not in the future then go for it, it's completely fine in terms of stability.

>>

I recommend Beta. You can expect features to remain in place for 6-8 weeks pretty much, there's basically no sudden breakages. It's not too far behind Nightly if you're interested in new features.
>>
>>59988066
>>59988145
Well they aren't doing this for fun, sometimes site gets really broken if your browser doesn't support some useless gimmick they happened to take a liking to.
Last time I fell for ESR meme it was 4chan-x. When moot broke the site once again the updated version required 26 no less for some reason, with 24 being the latest ESR.

Ha ha, no. It does, however, score highest on HTML5 compatibility. Mozilla need to pick up the pace as Edge is only one point behind Firefox these days.
>>
I'm happy they are killing the old addons. Your web browser shouldn't be build on stupid gimmicks. Tree style tabs are for rural retards and the other shit is useless. The only thing I am sad about is classic theme restorer. I might transfer to edge soon anyways because I like it's integration with one note. You can highlight stuff. I don't use chrome cause the search function is annoying. Like you search facebook and it says press tab to use facebook search.
