well it depends on what you do?

I first install filezilla, sublime text 3, firefox, and gitkraken. I use krita for photo editing. Just don't let /g/ make you feel bad for using what is comfy to you.

One of my favorite little utilities is cpufreq. It might already be installed on your system. It lets you throttle your CPU to whatever you like. Quite useful with a laptop on a hot day.

QEMU-KVM for virtual machines, pair it with virt-manager

Put XFS on your external devices. Fucking fast.

Enable ssh, disable root ssh, get a public key on your device, and port forward it. You can pair with tmux for persistent terminal sessions on the go.
Want to download a movie before you get home from work: Fire up transmission in a terminal and toss it a magnet to the movie, all over your phone.
Or remote manage services you host for other people.

Krita for drawing, if you art.
tlp for laptop power consumption management.
htop is better than most GUI system monitors.
Blender for 3D, a bit complicated but well worth once you understand it.

Foobar2000 and Firefox in WINE (ff actually runs faster in wine than native on Linux unfortunately).

Firefox on Windows platforms and wrappers can be buggy in my experience.
