GPD Pocket review (7" laptop)

The guys says it has an SSD, but it's actually an Emmc.

>intel atom z8750 quad core
>8gb ram
>128gb emmc

However, looks like a neat device.

Would you buy it? It's $450

it's shit, fuck off, no thanks

Why the shit would I need a laptop that's barely bigger than my dick?
>>
>it craps itself when running minecraft

Great "laptop" you got there mate
>>
He forgot to mention the battery lasts for 20 minutes
>>
To be honest for the money i'd rather get an iPad or 11" ultrabook
>>
>>59932722
The new iPad looks like an incredible buy at $329.
Faster than any Android tablet released despite using the A9, cheaper than most Android tablets and it actually has the best support for apps.
>>
To be honest the pocket makes me wish GPD could make a more "premium" version of the GPD WIN with better finishing.
>>
>>59932743
I'd rather buy a Samsung tablet though just for the AMOLED screen and Android though.
>>
>>59932743
I wish it had pen support, i'm almost tempted to pay the extra scratch for that feature.
>>
>>59932743

Yeah, great machine for skype and candy crush

>>
>>59932743
There's no point whatsoever in buying Android tablets nowdays when you can buy a $200 Chromebook that you can actually be productive on since it comes with a keyboard and mouse. I just wish you could use the smart keyboard cover on the new iPad but you can't really complain for $329.
>>
Don't the japs have a laptop which a similar size but much more powerful? Like a pocket thinkpad or something. I can't remember the name though...
>>
>$450 for this shit with atom processor

>you can buy reputable chinese brand tablets with Core m3 processors for less than $350

You have to be literally autistic to buy this

>We are talking abour real productivity devices not childrens' toys
iPads are used as informational displays at most places.
iPads are also used as Point-of-sale terminals at a lot of stores.
iPads are used as textbooks in a lot of colleges and schools.
iPads are used as commercial pilots' reference devices.

Your manly "productivity device" in the OP is going to be used to play retro games and shitposting on reddit and 4chan. Now tell me again, which one is the children's toy, fucking autist.
>>

I will wait until AMD releases their ultra lowpower and super fast Ryzen laptop CPU.
>>
>>59932802

What use do I, a student have for an ipad? Can i write my notes on it? not without some awkward clanky keyboard

Can i do spreadsheets on it? Sure, let me just input formulas using touch

Can I use mathlab? Thats a no go.

Can I code in c/java at least? Nope.

Not even that, you could buy a business netbook with an Atom and at least not get something made like shit. Atoms aren't inherently bad if all you want is very simple tasks, unfortunately that monstrosity in the OP has a shitty keyboard to the most simple task (typing) is a near impossibility.

Agreed, but I'm going to shill one of the new win10 netbooks first. I was considering tablets but went with the asus x205 with 4gb ram.

I almost always have onenote, a few pdfs and about 20 tabs running on edge. As powerful as i need +12 hour battery is nice.

~25Gb of usable on-board storage is probably a deal breaker for most people, but i use it for nothing other than to study so i don't mind.

I think anon meant the CPU you'd find in a $100 tablet

all broadwell and broadwell-based architectures got this issue where lightning is gray/black, aka. alpha blend bug.
Check out pic rel. If you're familiar with l4d2 maps then this is a screenshot of last "No Mercy" campaign (safe room). Brightness is set to maximum, and yet everything is so fucking dark than this makes most games unplayable.
Also issue is not fixable via driver. Intel identified this issue as "non-critical" and it's noted in official spec update of both i7-5600u (and similar) series and xX-z8X00 atom series

Why does gdp have to shill on /g/? they did it already with the stupid gaymur machine.

Gotta love the misleading advertising too, trying to make it look like thier PoS atom is twice as good as the MBA when it's a lot worse

also
>$600 retail (read: if you dont want to preorder this device that has not been reviewed properly)
>>
>>59934155
thats because gpd overheats and the cpu is throttling. Normally if it's running at the maximum of it's capabilities it works fine.
Also there is a difference between single and dual channel memory. On single channel it could be unplayable because iGPU performance is degraded.

GET THE FUCK OUT

eMMC uses 0.2W of power when active. SSD uses 3-4W. That's MORE THAN A CPU INSIDE THIS THING.

>>
>>59938823
You keep quoting this 250MBps shit like it actually means something. You do realize that that is sequential right? Sequential being the speed that matters the absolute least when it comes to responsiveness.
eMMC has dog slow 4k access times and shit controllers. It's cheap shit. If it was so good, it would be used in things other than cheapest of the cheap chink shit phones. Even the iPhone doesn't use eMMC. Why? Because it is shit.
>>
>>59938927
You based your argument on speed. Then when you got btfo, you moved the goalpost to power use. At this point, I realize you are trolling.
>>
>>59938929
maybe (((in comparison))) it's shit, but it's the only appliance we got on the market for such low powered devices.
Do you understand, you stupid fucktard, that you cannot just stick a normal SSD inside this thing because you'll rape the battery life?
Compare power consumption of eMMC and standard SSD on the market. Do it now
Did you see how small the battery is? This Atom SoC problably doesn't even have a SATA controller in it.
>>
>>59938972
My argument was about speed, which is enough for almost everyone needs. No, I'm not counting you and your retarded needs.
Do you also hate smartphones and bitch all the time about slow eMMC inside? You know EVERY single smartphone on the market has eMMC drive in it?

I'm not even going to dignify your "applel" comment. I don't give a fuck about the iPhone either but I was responding to the comment that "every smartphone uses emmc". The iPhone is a smartphone. It does not use emmc. Get it through your thick heads you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

gpd is not an iphone. It's a x86 based computer. Not a fucking smartphone. It's a completely different architecture.
You CANNOT use nvm/ufs memory in it.
And I don't give a shit about smartphones. I only told you that eMMC memory is 100% usable in mobile devices, just like it's usable in GPD that this entire thread is all about.
maybe I was wrong about all devices having emmcs, but this is not the point of this discussion. You're picky.

I have one preordered for a more mobile pen testing system
only concern is I'll probably have to use a usb wifi transmitter instead but that's not too surprising. I can only guess it's using the same shitty sdio setup most chink intel tablets use where the wifi and bluetooth are on a fucking emmc bus. 4.11 rc5 improved it alot, even better than the windows driver now but it's still shit compared to a proper wireless card
>>
>>59939521
The issue is not that eMMC is merely "slow". The problem is that it has terrible painful random read/write speeds. It is going to relegate the entire GPD experience to being low end suck. I'm excited about a laptop I can put in my pocket. But not one that will have me cursing at it every time I try to use it. No thanks.
>>59939680
>atom doesn't have enough resources to handle nvm memory. It does not have free pcie lines and it does not have sata controller.
That's a bunch of fucking bullshit. The x7-Z8750 has 2 pci express 2.0 lanes and a 2x1, 1x2 pci express configuration which is way more than enough to support SATA or NVMe.
But please shamelessly continue to expose your ignorance to the rest of /g/. I'm enjoying making you look like a fool.

>where the wifi and bluetooth are on a fucking emmc bus.
You don't understand the difference between sdio and emmc, right?
>>

So you need another SATA controller. Which uses more power.
>NVMe
>Don't worry, it ain't a discrete NVMe controller or Serdes or any physical boundary of "SSD," but logic that gets integrated into A9 and presented like an NVMe to the OS.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+6s+Teardown/48170

So now please show me a single x86 tablet with Atom CPU on the market that uses nvm storage instead of emmc.
Go on

>>
>>59939874
>So you need another SATA controller. Which uses more power.
You do that and go from shittastic painful storage speed to great storage and instead of 12 hours of battery life you end up with 11. That's what's called a rational trade-off. Battery life had nothing to do with the decision to go with eMMC.

>So now please show me a single x86 tablet with Atom CPU on the market that uses nvm storage instead of emmc.
The GPD isn't a tablet in case you didn't notice. With the extra room inherent with a laptop form factor especially how thick this thing is, the makers made the explicit choice not to add a controller for an acceptable type of storage. They could have but they didn't and no amount of crying or shilling from you is going to change that.

>show me an alternative that can handle such amount of heat and not overheat.
I don't have to do that. The mere fact that the thing supports USB C means it is capable of supporting storage faster than eMMC. But aside from that, even if the GPD's makers had chosen a SOC that cripples what kind of storage they can use the obvious answer is they should have chosen something else. Like oh, I don't know, the Core fucking *m*?
>>
Lol the amount of pent of sexual frustration in this thread.

This thing is a neat concept. The keyboard seems tiny AF. It has decent specs apart from emmc and even then we should wait for benchmarks. I might shell out $400 for it not a cent more though.

It does support USB C, just like Asus T100HA and any other similar products.
But it's just a connector, and the interface is in fact USB 3.0.
You now imply using USB 3.0 to handle system drive. Good fucking luck.
