Hey /g/, how reliable are wireless keyboards? I've never used one before, but a friend recommended I look into one of these for my living room setup. Anyone ever used one before? Are they normally battery operated? charge based?

Before you ask, yes I have a decent mechanical keyboard. This isnt for my computer, its for a living room Smart TV.
>>
that looks fucking horrible dude
like typing on a bowl of cheerios

I have one that looks exactly like op's pic but without the glowing keys.
It works very well and the keys feel nice.

Welcome to Techmoan OP

I sure hope it isn't allowed internet access.
>>
>>59929515
I also have one of those only without the disco lights. I use it with an android powered Kodi box. If it doesn't have a clear line of sight to the Kodi box, it loses connection, which makes it frustrating to use sometimes. Otherwise, it's fine. It has built-in rechargeable battery that charges with a micro-usb connection.
>>
The Microsoft ones work quite well.
>>
Not OP but gonna hijack thios thread since my question is similar:

I' just bought a NUC for a mini media center device, SO i need a keyboard and mopuse for it, but its next to the VCR, and theres no room for a desktop setup. So would a mini wifi keyboard be a good alternative?

The Logitech K400 and the like are pretty good feeling. But I hope you don't like using Fn keys much; they're a bit awkward to use. The touchpad feels ok; not great. But the left click button they position on the top left of the board is really nice, makes it easier to use on the couch (slide RH thumb on right, LH thumb clicks). Combine with a wireless trackball and it's a really comfy setup for a good variety of uses.

I don't use a NUC; but this is my Raspian setup for a Pi3.

A living room without Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at my disposal is not a living room to me.

>>59929905
K400 looks promising.

I have the logitech k400, bought off amazon for cheap.
works great with my raspberry pi
>>
>>59929515

yes
>does it work well
the problem is in cheap buttons and sometimes finicky touchpads depending on brand

How high spec is a pi? I know its used a lot for emulating retro gaming, but does it run anything current gen well?
>>
>>59929991
Pi3 has a quad core 1200MHz ARMv8 SoC, 1GB RAM. It also has HDMI out and a hardware H264 decode.
It's pretty good for media output, and has a pretty beefy GPU for what it is.
>>
>>59930023
Interesting.

I'm looking for a mini all in one media box for my back room, Something that can support seperate HDDs for Anime/cinema/media storage, and can run minimal spec Steam based indie games. Essentially be a PC based console hooked to a TV rather than a monitor. I was considering something like >>59929827
but if the pi does better I might reconsider, especially seeing as its cheaper.

I have this one. Works fine for my htpc. Backlight can be switched off.

Intel NUC is a pretty good choice, also check out things like the the Zotac ZBox, and AsRock BeeBox

>seperate HDDs for Anime/cinema/media storage
Pi is great for receiving media streams from a NAS, but not from its own storage. USB2.0 is abysmal.
>>
>>59930099
Good lord that thing is ugly
>>
>>59930115
Awesome thanks, I'll keep looking at the NUC then. I'm hoping to set up hyperspin too for some sweet arcade co-op nights

the k400 is such a fucking piece of shit.
>tons of connection interferences which make the cursor jump around and produce random clicks (at a distance of about 3m to the receiver)
>the layout is pure shit
>some keys work as Fn keys by default (e.g. volume change) some not (e.g. F2)

that said, I still use it because typing with the thing in OP is a chore and there seem to exist no other wireless keyboards with integrated touchpad for a sane price. I also like the left mouse button on the top left of the keyboard, great design there.

>>59929515
Search for one with scroll function or some shit, the pageup/down sucks for scrolling.

is what i use and if it had some touchpad scroling instead of the dedicated pg up/down keys it would be perfect

I have this. Charge is not a problem, since i only charge it once (i have this thing for months, maybe i'm not using it too much) charger port is mini usb NOT micro, touchscreen is not that good but it does the job, if you're looking for a thing to kodi it's good enough, but if you are going to web browse and shiet it might not be that good
>>
Can I use the Xbox One chatpad for this?

Stop dicking about with this crap OP and get a K400.
These things are shit.
>>
>>59929515
i have one of those. it came with some random android tv stick.

it's fucking awful.
>>
>>59929550
Unfortunately the glowing key version is much lower quality than the one you have. DO NOT UPGRADE. I've had 5-6 of these bad boys, I rather like them just as gadgets. The one you have is best you can get for the tactile feedback and for how accurate the trackpad is.
>>
>>59929515
I have it, it's awful beyond a distance of 1m or if your hand is positioned over the antenna. Also, it burnt one of my laptop's USB ports when I tried to recharge it, releasing some black smoke in the process.
>>
>>59929515
I have one of these. It's fucking brilliant! Battery charge lasts forever too. Comfy as fuck to use on the sofa in the dark to play my pirate movies.
>>
I have connected my PC to my bedroom TV and use the keyboard in pic.

It's pretty nice and removes the need for a mouse. I mean, you don't really need much when on a couch/in bed.

Only negative is that it feels too light. Kind of weird.

I used to use chrome remote desktop with my smartphone to navigate stuff while in the bed, but that got old quick.

I suggest you get an actual keyboard, though, instead of those tiny meme keyboards
>>
>>59934779
fugg, forgot picture
>>
>>59934788
Have you actually tried these? they are horrible and extremely overpriced
You have to hold down the fn button to perform standard F-button tasks ie F5 etc.
>>
>>59934934
Yeah, I have it right here besides me.

It's not like I'm using it to replace my main keyboard. Just navigating between websites/folders.

I've actually found the current f-buttons way more useful than the f1-f12 keys, since I practically never used them, while I use the alternate keys all the time.
>>
>>59934934
For an HTPC you almost never need the F keys. I can't think of any occasion I've needed them with my own HTPC.
>>
>>59934989
>>59935028
We bought 4 of these for our users at work. They mostly use the keyboard to update an intranet page it's just so unhandy with the fn button
Also, they prefer having a physical mouse anyway, so that's why i find them overpriced for my/our usecase.

If i needed one for a HTPC, i'd prolly go for the K400. Im fairly sure it has sane F buttons.

I'm using Genius Slimstar T8020 for my android tv box, much better ergonomics and response than cheap chink wireless keyboard+touchpad I tried before
