>it has an ad for another app which opens .rar files
>can't see any files
>extract (slowly)
>error message telling me I need a password or something

Only time I ever had exposure to it was when someone recommended the sonicwall netextender client in the windows app store as I was having problems with the latest version I downloaded myself.

The version on the app store was fucking decrepit and obviously didn't even try to work any better

Why are you letting your OS do this? You should already know from using Windows for so many years that 7zip is the utility to use for extracting any and all archive files. Also, your file was encrypted.
