I honestly almost got a job offer at Google (did a good impression at the on-site interviews), but they wanted me to relocate from Norway to either Ireland or Zurich, and neither were anywhere close to acceptable to me.
>>
>>59925071
I work for SpaceX
>>
>>59925111
You fucked up hard time. Do you even realize how much money you can earn in Zurich, especially working for Google?
Unless you don't give a shit about money I guess, but Switzerland is a pretty nice country in general, save for ridiculously high costs of everything.

>You fucked up hard time. Do you even realize how much money you can earn in Zurich, especially working for Google?
Not even remotely near what I currently earn as a senior consultant / architect here with yearly bonuses. Plus moving abroad would have fucked up my pension saving big time.

Zurich has almost the same cost of living as Oslo, but the pay Google would offer me would have been a significant reduction (as my responsibilities would have been significantly less than my current responsibilities, and I would have to learn how to suck American corporation dick from scratch in order to climb the career ladder).

Anybody know whats avg in zurich? Are cost of living in zurich comparable to cali?

I keep getting emails from their recruiters but I don't want to work for a large corporation. I'd rather work at start-ups while I'm young. Maybe I'll hit the jackpot and my stock will be worth something. Then I can go work for Google when I'm older and I want stability.

>Are they making more money in zurich than in cali?
No. California has some seriously good tax benefits for visa workers. Cost of living in bay area is crazy though.

>Report says that avg cali entry level job at google is ~10k $/month, but cost of living are pretty high.
It's less than $10k/mo in Zurich (for an entry job), the job offer I got was around 6k/mo (before taxes) + benefits (Switzerland has some weird health insurance system).

>Anybody know whats avg in zurich? Are cost of living in zurich comparable to cali?
No idea what the avg in Zurich is, but cost of living is higher than California in general, but a significantly lower than cost of living in bay area.

It was a Hangouts interview with coding done in Google Docs. I was extremely nervous leading up to the interview, but I spent lots of time (and money) on InterviewCake, HackerRank, and just general YouTube shit about interviewing at tech companies. Once I was actually into the code and questions it all seemed fairly familiar because of that. It was even a question that I had practiced on. l'm waiting to hear back from my recruiter on if I did well, though.

Fun Fact: if you're applying to Google and want a slightly higher chance for a face to face interview, put "mixed race" or "african american" as your identity.

HR's priority will give you roughly 15% to 20% higher chance for a sit down. But the hiring manager won't know what race you identified as, only HR.

And keep in mind ( I don't work for google ) but in my nearly 20 years in HR, we have never had one case where we had to verify a person's race. That would be a legal nightmare.

ex googler here, some advice to the nooglers (new googlers)

Work a year and GET THE FUCK OUT

seriously, you get paid a lot, there's a lot of benefits, but you will not go anywhere unless you GET THE FUCK OUT.

You will coast through life and settle into a rhythm of wake-up-code-eat the provided lunch-sleep. Next thing you know you're in your 30s having done nothing with the prime years of your life because you've done nothing but code and eat.

They encourage a good work life balance, but the workload is so high that you'll be giving up sleep if you wanna do extra curriculars.

Behind the smiles and security is a dead end career. It's like a cubicle farm without fucking cubicles. Also your job function will mostly stick to the department/team you're stuck with... so you will become specialized on that one thing - as opposed to being good at and trying new things.

This is great when you have a family and settled and just wanna work and chill until your kids are grown up. But if you are in your mid 20s early 30s... jesus christ be scrappy and work at other tech companies and feel the real world

The window to actually do shit with your life is very small. Don't become part of the ex googlers who realized they wasted their youth. There are other more ambitious and challenging start ups that provide the same thing.

That said working for google looks amazing on resume so work a year at least.

I'd dig my badge for proof but too lazy

>Next thing you know you're in your 30s having done nothing with the prime years of your life because you've done nothing but code and eat.

So literally every software engineer ever?
If you replace the bits of "code" with "work", you've described every professional ever.

This is life in the corporate world. It's such a well-established thing we have comics, TV shows, and movies dedicated to it.

You're born, you go to school, you work, and then you die. Welcome to America. Enjoy your stay.

>hurr durr whites have privilege and shit
If you are a white male in IT today, to HR you are a piece of shit. They don't want you, and if you already work there they would love to replace you with a cheaper pajeet or a minority hire for "muh diversity."

I'm between full time jobs doing contract work, and I have been flat out told by someone who would know that I should identify as a minority or a transgender or both to get my next full time position.
>>
>>59926057
I'm not at google, but it is still a corporate environment. The only thing good about my work is that since it is a smaller company and not primarily tech focused, I get a chance to see and explore a lot of different tech.

Anyways, my goal is to just save up enough money so that when I am in my thirties I could work for a startup, or do something on my own and not worry about cash. Just a thought.
>>
>>59926138
if this is the reality you've accepted for yourself then go right ahead... majority of people do settle in a rhythm. But do realize majority of people who are considered successful are the ones who encountered an event that yanked them out of it forcing them to try something else. That 'yank' cannot come from Google

Also it's easier to make an impact in smaller startups than in google, just sayin'

it's also easier to get life fulfillment working for an industry you believe in.

take it how you will, I'm only 33, I'm not gonna pretend I have life figured out like you
>>
>>59926228
Yeah, we were hiring for a while and it was really weird to see a specific push to hire women. This was comming from managment type people.

Isn't that kind of sexists, like shouldn't you just hire who is good? Actually one of the few people we hired was a girl. She wasn't a team-player at all, so it was incredibly hard having her on our team. She ended up leaving after a few months.

Most people only work for google for about 1 year or so and get burnt out and leave. Working in IT in silicon valley I personally know tons of people who work(ed) for facebook, twitter, microsoft, oracle, google, etc.

None of them are worth it. If you want a truly rewarding job, go work for a medium sized company.

I always always put mixed race or latino (hispanic) on my HR app.

Also interviewers always think I am a light skinned mexican, I don't correct that notion, I get 90% of the jobs I apply for because they think they found a brown person for their team.

You start by searching for stuff in your city, where I live, we have jobbanks that specifically target city and industry. usually, you can ask people from the city to help you can find out who to talk to. (here a lot of municipalities headhunt for you as they want you to move to a specific place)
>>
>>59926601
the hardest part is finding one, then most people who work at medium sized companies only work at medium sized companies and they will have weaker HR departments, so once you work with someone, do not burn any bridges with anyone as most jobs at medium sized companies are from word of mouth.

I get 2 unprompted job offers a year on average from people I used to work with who went to other companies.

Becuase I blew the first technical interview. Did my interview in C# and the question was asked in a weird format which caused me to take 25 minutes just to understand what the interviewer was really asking.

Asked a question that had to do with a "list of pointers". C# tries to avoid pointer wizardry, so I was like "what the fuck...", turns out she basically meant an object, with some fields.

Gonna reapply once it's been a year. I've actually wanted to work there since I was 16

Does google have any interest in bioinformatics/comp bio?

Interns making roughly 34 an hour.

ok I stand corrected, I didnt know google paid their interns. That's a pretty damn good wage too for an entry level position

Np. Apologies for the harsh tone.

Also, the average quant salary at a bank will probably be less than what a Googler will make when you include stock. And the perks are no where near as nice. Also, you'll mostly be working for managers that look at you as nothing but a cost center.

The best quant gigs hire almost exclusively from academia or R&D, they tend to be very wary of finance types.
>>
>>59929493
They also only recruit/hire from top schools

Wrong. I got into the interview process and I go to a state school.

Lucky anon. GPA? Past internships? Good side projects? Cold application online? Recruiter from your school? Did you apply for the quant trader or software engineer position? Did you pass the interview?

Recruiter was looking into the school's program. She contacted me sometime in November, waaaaay before I was scheduled to graduate (I graduate this May).

3.35 GPA, 2 year internship with a medical device company. Member of IEEE HKN

With the medical device company, I created a simulation of their medical device and began work on a new device using existing hardware.

In school I created a 16 bit microprocessor as part of a 3 person team, coded an AI capable of playing a board game, and other shit

At the time I didn't have any good side projects. Pretty sure she had me apply to the software engineer position.

Passed initial screens and got a technical interview over the phone, but failed that.

Planning on applying in a year

Thanks anon. I'm at a small Canadian university and we've never had anyone from {JS, 2S, DE Shaw, Citadel} recruit from here. I'll be applying online in the fall, I hope I pass the resume screen

No problem. She found me through LinkedIn. Any applications I sent to Google before the recruiter contacted me were basically ignored.

Yep. I got hired and I went to a no-name school (I guarantee nobody here has heard of it). I don't know if it's different because I'm outside of the US though - there aren't really any "top schools" here.
>>
>>59930195
One more question, were the questions they asked mathy or typical CS algorithm questions?
>>
>>59929319
>the strong rise to the top and manage your dumb ass

Actually the useless rise to the top because most of the real talent have other options and leave. This was a huge documented problem at Microsoft and it has also become a huge problem at Google in the last 5 years.
>>
>>59930350
Algorithms. Didn't run into any math type of questions in the code sample or technical interview. I only got to the first technical interview, they typically do 5~7 technical interviews.

Does it have to be only that? would something else work like say maybe you're seriously into being femdomed and being a sub to a strong independent feminist? We already seen that you would certainly be considered and persona non grata and unhireable in the opposite case, if you where into maledom and suby women.

depends on how they define impact. software regression and constant failed projects are an impact, albeit a bad one.

im 26 and have no coding experience and never graduated college, any chance google would hire me?

I've been on the internet forever, I could give them the inside scoop on a lot of things they might be missing
>>
>>59925071
About 12 years ago or so, when I was just out of school, it took me about 2 months to find a job. The day after I accepted a job at a large California city, I got a call from Google asking me to come in for an interview. I told them sorry, I just accepted another job offer, and they asked me if I would still come into interview, but I was in a 'my word is my bond' kind of phase, and didn't want to go back on my word to take the other job.

Honestly, I don't really regret it, because my life has turned out fine (today I'm comfortably making six figures at a good job, own my own house, am married to a great wife, have a cute dog, etc), but I do wonder how things might have played out differently had they called me for an interview just a day or two earlier.

And there it is.. the footprint of the Jewish controlled media. Just bear in mind how big an omission they have manager to structure into your life by not mentioning

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genrikh_Yagoda

Or the fact that the Jews funded the Bolshevik revolution and then started a war in Germany intended to turn Germany into a communist state, a war that killed 3.5 million people.

>>59929013
1. That's a recruiter, not an interviewer.
2. Times have changed.
3. You shouldn't need to go through a recruiter, you should get a referral. The point of the initial filter is a dumb test to weed out the people who are obviously incompetent, hence the piece of paper test. Otherwise you're wasting interviewer time on obviously incompetent people. It's better to reject 100 competent people than accept one incompetent.

Employed at tech big four.

It's as expected. If you've taken a college level algorithms class and study Glassdoor/Topcoder/CtCInterview questions for ~3 weeks, you're probably good.

Buy a mid sized whiteboard on Amazon and practice the talking though, you can catch verbal fuckups at home easier and practice delivery. Mine, before doing this, was I sounded wooden and dumb rather than razor sharp before practicing important lines like

>"As I am on a whiteboard and I've forgotten exact syntax for <bleh>, I will use <syntax substitution> for the remainder of the question."

That line will save your bacon if you're brain farting on stupid language rules; "wrong, honest, and consistent" is as good a signal to get hires as "right".

But be right or very close.

Most of the smarter people left Google years ago.
They only have college grads left. Or those few people that have a really fucking cushy job for doing basically nothing.
Same with Microsoft.

All the good talent left and formed their own companies and took half the good employees with them.
