1. Provide big corporates with a reason to develop games and professional tools for linux (good luck with Adobe!)

2. Provide a distro that "just werks" for those who generally don't need any customization, but they'd rather get a stable system where they don't have to look online on how to spend 3 hours setting up something like sharing folders over network

3. Gather better hardware support, specially with GPUs

4. Advertise it with "this is a free OS that doesn't have as much spying and doesn't take as many resources"

That's how you do it

I'll be blunt.

Linux has improved dramatically for desktops over the years. Dramatically as in, if we went back to 2010 some of the most popular and used distros would feel unusable in comparison with their current releases.

But with all the steps it took, it is still shit. Still today it has several issues that turn off people who generally have used Windows or macOS for a while. One example is DEs, there's definitely nothing as polished (even with the fuckups as of late from MS) as what is used on Windows or macOS. You have a fuckton of customization that turns into either slow or featureless environments. You either choose something modern that doesn't just run as well (The abomination that gnome 3 is, KDE), something that just about replaces Windows XP in usability (XFCE, MATE, Cinnamon), a now dead project of a system that attempts to become macOS and hasn't changed much for half a decade (Unity) or go full autist and remember 70 different keyboard combinations with a tiling WM.

>>
>>59903898
Since we already know the problem we have solved it half the way.
But problem with solution follows like this.

You can not expect open source OS to be better than proprietary one. Why you ask?
Think about it. Humans are intrinsically selfish[survival is fundamental motto of all organism]. Given that collective human being will not ever work to make an OS which is free available and them getting 0 dollars in return. Only when this collective human being act on the pressure of fucked by ayy lmaos from outer space.
>So there go your open source into trash.

Why isn't there any other proprietary OS to compete with windows?
There is MAC. But it target a fully different spectrum of people. People who are materialistic, who are in the spell of jew media who only care about looking better and getting more attention. Also a normal person who don't fall into above mentioned spectrum can easily replace windows with Mac, but since this seemingly normal person is not in that spectrum he has triats of his own spectrum i.e mostly gaming.
>Ask a girl to pick between mac and windows. She will pick mac.
>Ask a hetrosexual guy to pick between mac and windows. He will pick windows

Why there isn't any gaming windows-like OS?
Kudos to Bill Gates. He foresaw the market and made the bet first and the highest.
Think about it. Making an Operating system, marketting it, selling it is very tough job than let's say making and running leddit, 4chan, snapchat, facebook, funding money for spaceX, funding money for Telsa. No one has come closer to what Bill Gates has done yet. None in 8 billion people living on earth.

>>59904338
I never understand Windows users that use anything other than the latest version. Every complaint is so minor like squabbles over the start menu, something you use for like a few seconds every day at most, or like in Windows 10, people complain about the auto updates as if they didn't update anyway, even if you don't want to all you have to do is turn it off with the group policy editor, just like every other Windows setting since forever. Like why not use the latest, most stable edition. 10 actually brings some things I've personally wanted for a while like first party support for multiple workspaces, a package manager, and now this Linux ABI compatability layer.

What really keeps people from upgrading besides being lazy?

I use Debian stretch with MATE. I haven't had any problems and the UI is consistent. Everything is stable and just works. I have a Core2 Duo and 4GB of RAM and MATE loads up instantly compared to KDE or Gnome which are bloated and sluggish. MATE has all the features that one could need for day to day use on old hardware and it's easy to use and configure to your liking.

>despite what retards say about Linux user's free time
As a lifelong Windows user I am consistently buttranged anytime trolls shit on *nix, saying things like "Windows doesn't get in the way of my work". I've never had anything waste my time more than Windows. Only recently have I finally felt some relief, I don't know what changed but since 8 they've really been pushing for automating a lot more which isn't quite there yet, but it helps a lot. For years we've just been shit out of luck doing the same esoteric bullshit just to have a working OS without having to reinstall every few months.

Powershell, NuGet, OneGet, vcpkg, and some other shit, all seem to be taking inspiration from the *nix world on how to actually fucking save time by automating tasks instead of having a "friendly" GUI, "simple" in that sense isn't fast, it's just simple.
>click here then here then here and wait for this to finish then click this and that, now it's deployed
or
>just run the script and go get lunch
>>
>>59904477
It is normal for a new OS (specially Windows) to have issues the first months or year, so upgrading right away isn't a good idea, besides W7 works very well and I have been struggling to find a reason to upgrade.

I also tried W8.1 a while ago and had compatibility problems with some older programs I need, so I went back to 7 and problem solved.

But right now I'm bored out of my mind so I decided to make a new partition and give it a shot.

I also heard from some people that had some problems with certain hardware from before W10 came out, but idk if that's true.
>>
>>59903917
I was running that but I discovered the updates it gets are bare bare bare bare bare minimum - and I really wanted to play with the linux subsystem newly implemented - so Instead I moved to enterprise normal version to have all features and still control over the os with group policies.
>>
>>59904550
Because dumb speccy threads foold
>>
>>59904621
Fair enough, I've never had any issues whatsoever in regards to compatibility and I've used every mainline version of Windows. So I always get curious as to why people stay on the old ones. The only thing that comes to mind was drivers around the Vista times but none of my hardware was affected.
>>
>>59904634
Enterprise is nice but I wish it got the service pack updates from the MS servers, when they did the anniversary update I had to setup Windows Server in a vm with WSUS to push it to my machine, for the creators update I just upgraded from an ISO because it was simpler. Maybe there's a way to do it but they don't show up for me, just standard updates.
>>
>>59904720
If you want the updates just get the regular version and disable the ads and shit.

The point of LTSB-N is not not update, I don't want any of those updates.

If you try to impress me with your autism, OP, you will have to work harder.

Few months ago, one guy actually asked how to make a virus that would silently download and install Linux on infected PC, while deleting Windows, during next boot.

THAT was massive autism that /g/ wont outrun anytime soon.
>>
>>59905125
I had a similar incident, but after somebody suggested I to use win32diskimager, I went through the entire installation setup, oddly enough though the OS was missing at the startup. possibly an issue specific to BunsenLabs, then again I had to go during part of one of the setup's automatic processes

>besides W7 works very well and I have been struggling to find a reason to upgrade

Not him, but as somebody using Windows 10 Edu at home since few months and Pro at work since nearly year now, whenever somebody ask me about switching from 7, my reply basically is - if your 7 is working stable and everything is fine, there is no point in switching. If you have new hardware and need clean installation of Windows, pick 10 since its newer and will last longer.

Seriously, I cant find anything that Windows 10 would be better than 7, except that its newer and support for 7 will be slowly turning off from various devs.

And packages are in 7 as well, if we are talking about nuget at Powershell.

They have some funky battery backup built in that also acts as a USB phone charger in a hotplug bay. Wireless Qi charger on top of the case. Funky shit for around $225 a pop.
