Hey /g/.
I've never bought a NAS before, and it's time to do it.
I need it to access my stuff and watch movies on from anywhere, as well as enabling my parents to stream stuff on it via a future mediaplayer.
I will be doing 4K material.
What do I have to look out for? Are they simple enough so I can get any "4K ready!" tagged model and call it a day?
Do they try and scam you with shitty harddrives?
Any recommendations for guides or models?

You saying I can buy NAS-sized computers? Like some kind of raspberry pi?

>You saying I can buy NAS-sized computers?
I'm sure there are some places that you could buy a prebuilt, but I think he was talking about just building it yourself.
>Like some kind of raspberry pi?
No, not like an ARM board with no SATA ports. Just an x86_64 computer.

Huh, so basically just a small desktop pc?
Meaning normal pc parts? I doubt I can get a hold of old mitx hardware.

make sure you slap some ECC ram in there though if you want to use ZFS

Stop this meme.

stop this counter-meme
my hp microserver killed a volume on nexentastor because of this shit, so just use fucking ECC

So ecc ram only if you use ZFS?
Looking at these higher end NASes you end up at prices around 700-1000usd with new drives.
I understand the reason to build one yourself now.

Streaming a 4k source will require a pretty good cpu (expensive) for a nas. Also depends if you use plex or kodi.
>Do they try and scam you with shitty harddrives?
Usually you buy HDD seperately. Get nas certified drives like the red series from WD. I don't believe you need faster than 5400 rpm for streaming, higher rpm will be more expensive and louder.
You can build your own but the compact prebuilts are actually very nice, quiet, power efficient, have good support and software. I recommend Qnap

Lurk their respective forums and ask for advice.

I'd use Kodi.
I knew I should have gotten these cheap external harddrives that goes on sale from time to time that has WD Reds in them..
Qnap brand seems to have pretty ok prices.
Thanks!
