2012 called they want their clickbait back
>>
I don't live in China so it would take me a great deal more than $300. Plus I use a phone which cost me $220 and no labor. Pick your battles, kids.

Here's a good related doc about the electronics markets and makers in Shenzhen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGJ5cZnoodY
>>
>>59863209
He isn't hiding anything in the title

I don't think you know what clickbait is junior
>>
except that he spent another $1000 in extra parts and tools he didn't need.

Oh and of course spent several weeks putting it together as well.

What he really achieved here is getting his name/site out there with this now viral video spreading everywhere
>>
>>59863075
I can't stand clueless yuppies like this, hopefully he tries to go build his own Jihad in Syria and gets beheaded next
>>
>>59863128
Shenzhen is an amazing place. On the surface you have a city that looks like any big city with shopping malls, LV shops, Starbucks. But if you go astray from the beaten path you find shops like in the video. Fake markets. Everything.
>>
>>59863249
Months, and I don't think it's fair to count the $1K as part of the costs because of his unique stupidity. Especially when the video serves to keep others from making the same costly mistakes.

Don't try to microsolder. There, now it only costs ~$300.
>>
>>59863209
He even has the standard thumbnail with up close picture of the typical stupid fucking look all youtubers have

What's the issue?
>>
>>59863111
Please use commas
>>
>>59863249
All the market vendors would have jacked up the price at least 3 times for a western hipster who could barely speak Chinese. Someone who knew what they were doing could get it much cheaper.
>>
>>59863558
Does he actually build it? Or just assemble from parts he buys there? After 5 minutes it seemed to me like he's gonna just buy the parts and assemble it so I stopped watching.
>>
>>59863635
What's the difference?

where is my medal?
>>
>>59863635
Even though he bought a panel to try it with, he didn't solder the logic board from scratch because it's seriously fucking difficult for an amateur.
>>
>>59863075
>"It's so easy to repair and recycle these phones."
LOL!
>>
>>59863661
Why would you get a medal
>>
>>59863661
you can disassemble and reassemble everything that's already put together like the dude in the video
the cool thing about the video is how he actually goes on making it the hardest way possible (like buying the logic board without any chips and soldering them, separating all components from the screen and putting it together etc)
>>
>>59863637
>>59863667
I feel that building is about creating something new, not just following some assembly steps. When I saw a title about "building a phone" I thought about designing the PCB and shit (I expected he would use the case though). Also, if the video was titled "How I assembled my own iPhone in China", it wouldn't really sound that impressing, would it?

>>

The dudes on the streets in China do the PCBs themselves which is cool
>>
How come there aren't any "hackintosh" iphones running iOS?

This seems like something chinks would be able to do.
>>
>>59863739
hardware compatibility you dummy.
It's the reason apple-made OSes only work on apple-made hardware.
>>
>>59863715
I was hoping the same, but it's still worth a watch.
>>
>>59863754
Isn't it just a custom ARM chip?
>>
>phone repair school
Nice
>>
>>59863769
Yep. Nothing else, just an ARM chip connected to a touch screen.
>>
>>59863769
The SoC uses an ARM core, but there's all the other shit that the OS needs to integrate with.
>>
>>59863075
>someone in america is capable of using a vernier caliper
oh wow
>>
>>59863739
people don't care if it really is an iphone

if it looks like one (hardware) and the software part (heavily skinned android) then they don't care
>>
>>59863075
Because it takes an ridiculous amount of luck to get a proper board and parts the first time around.

Not even refering to the shitstorm that is getting the other components.

This guy's a fucking idiot. It took him fucking MONTHS to assemble few used parts.

Holy shit what a retard!
>>
>>59864145
I'm sensing jelly here
>>
>>59864145
It's a hell of a lot harder to do it from questionable market stalls in a foreign country while not speaking the language.
>>
Wow, a video posted on /g/ that's actually worth watching.

Well done.
>>
>>59864145
took a day to assemble and months to find all the parts actually
>>
>>59864201
Not really. To save few hundred bucks guy had to deal with chinks for fucking months.

>>59864237
But he had a bunch of "friends" help him and thye translated a bunch of shit.

But yeah, it's def tough being a foreigner in China. Props for that.

But still... it's not like he did anything himself. He just asked chinks for used parts. There's not much that's hard about that.

I wanna do my own one from ebay and Aliexpress parts. Is it possible?
>>
>>59864251
>took a day to assemble and months to find all the parts actually
I find that absolutely unbelievable. iPhone is incredibly popular there and they have tons of spare parts. Also, iPhone 6S is old and used/second-hand market is huge.

It's ridiculous to waste that much time finding parts.

>>59864262
>I wanna do my own one from ebay and Aliexpress parts. Is it possible?
Absolutely. You can do it much less time and I bet for dirt cheap too.
>>
>>59864251
>>59864283

The end of the video shows him assembling it in probably no more than an hour or two, although he got stuck by missing the metal spring mechanism for the buttons, and he was supposedly in and out of China during those months.
>>
>>59864283
It's not a waste if he enjoyed himself, you miserable cunt.
>>
>>59864145
Putting the phone together was something he was doing in his spare time, and he even says he spent time in and out of China (probably doing other more important things) during the building process
>>
>>59864361
>Putting the phone together was something he was doing in his spare time, and he even says he spent time in and out of China (probably doing other more important things) during the building process

he spent $1300 on a hacked together 2 year old phone

genius
>>
>>59865161
Yes, but the $1000 is unrelated to building the iPhone. That's his stupid mistake. He spent $300 on the actual iPhone parts + service of vendors. If someone wanted to do what he did they would only have to spend $300 on parts.
>>
>>59865181
>Yes, but the $1000 is unrelated to building the iPhone.

it was related to building the phone because it was fucking money he spent while building the phone
>>
>>59865194
It was money he idiotically spent when preparing to build the phone because he thought he would have to solder the logic board, which he didn't. So technically he didn't use the $1000 spent on building the phone. And furthermore someone taking on the task that he did would NOT have to spend $1000.
>>
>>59865229

You try to build an iphone without buying any tools or parts that don't work

oh wait
>>
>>59865280
The tools he spent $1000 on were not used to build the iPhone. Did you even watch the video? He would use the vendors tools instead.
>>
>>59863709
>the cool thing about the video is how he actually goes on making it the hardest way possible (like buying the logic board without any chips and soldering them, separating all components from the screen and putting it together etc)
but he gave up doing that, and just bought a fully populated and burned logic board.
>>
>>59863635
assembled is shit. it's what US companies to say they are "made in the US"

see power tool companies and what Motorola did with the Moto X. you can actually go the Dewalt factory and also "make" your own power drill, which you can then buy
>>
Eh, little click baity with the title. More of assembling an iPhone and not building one. Cool video still. That market place looks incredible. I feel you'd be very hard pressed to find anything similar in 'merica.
>>
>>59865340
>with the title. More of assembling an iPhone and not building one. Cool video still. That market place looks incredible. I feel you'd be

Imagine being this autistic because he bought parts and put it together

Building and assembling means the same shit to a normal person(((unlike you)))same thing dip shit

kinda seems like Custom Water Loops.
its a hobby and part of the fun for some people.
>>
>>59863209
So any video describing how someone did something is click bait? Have you even watched the video? It explains fully how he built an entire iPhone from stock parts while in Shenzhen. How is that in any way misleading?
>>
>>59864201

There is nothing to be jealous of, he "saved" a free hundred dollars by spending hundreds of hours scouring parts sources for months. I'd rather pay the bit extra money and save hundreds of hours of my life for something else. If this shit took a week it would be something to envy.
>>
>>59865181
>If someone wanted to do what he did they would only have to spend $300 on parts.

And if they spent those 3 fucking months of part gathering doing literally anything else (even gluing fucking Macaroni on paper and selling on Etsy), they could make more money that what they save on a $300 iPhone.
>>
>>59863075
How did he repartner the touch ID sensor?

I thought those weren't swappable and the phone wouldn't boot without it.
>>
I saw this on Reddit already... You may delete your thread now. Thank you.
>>
How did he get thru all the propriety ARM stuff. There's this other guy try to swap the black screen into the red iphone and it wouldn't boot.
