We already have 1070s in razor thin (no pun intended) Razer Blade laptops that perform within like 3% of the desktop version. Seems to me like a single slot on a desktop should have been a forgone conclusion from day 1.

there's tons of cheap office pcs, many pretty small but have space enough for just a single slot card (usually some super low end gfx for extra monitors).

Probably due to the limited amount of applications where someone wanted 2 expansion cards in an ITX form factor where a GPU wasn't one of the expansion cards. If that's already available then I can see it growing in popularity dramatically along side higher end single slot GPUs like in the OP.
