I've been using xfce on my laptop for awhile now, but the only applications I use are chromium and terminal applications inside tmux. Most of the stock xfce programs have been replaced with lighter alternatives (ranger, vim, sxiv, mpv, mupdf, etc.).
There's no point in running xfce anymore, what's a good replacement? I don't wanna go tiling cause I already use tmux, which I'm quite happy with.
>>
>>59848410
Most people I know in the situation like you use Openbox.
>>
>>59848410
Using a tiling wm doesn't automatically mean you need to use the tiling features. Most of them have floating modes.

just keep xfce unless you really want maximum rice, but then your fonts fuck up and you have to fix them, your gtk themes fuck up and you have to fix them, your dpi fucks up and you have to fix it, you plug in another monitor and it fucks up, etc.

I asked a question in the last thread about KoToR 2 on Debian and Ubuntu. To answer my interlocutor, there was no WINE involved. A company named Aspyr took the game and added native iOS and Linux support; Steam now hosts this patched version of the game, so now everyone can enjoy KoToR, regardless of platform. Officially they only support Ubuntu 14.04 for any of their patched games. So, no WINE. Just Steam, and KoToR.
Obviously there are large differences between Ubuntu and Debian, but presumably both use libavcodec, which added Bink support many years ago.
So, where to start, Anon?

I know you got this already answered on the last thread, but just so you learn something:
awk:

# prints the 4th colum, delimited by space (default)
awk '{ print $4 }'

# prints the 4th colum, delimited by space, but only on lines that contain "something"
awk '/something/ { print $4 }'

# prints the last colum (NF), delimited by comma (-F = field separator)
awk -F, '{ print $NF }'

# hello world: awk works like this: awk 'BEGIN {initialize} condition1 {stmts} condition2 {stmts}... END {finish}'
awk 'BEGIN { print "Hello, world!"; }'

# play some random music
awk 'BEGIN {srand(); while(1) {wl=1000*(0.87055^(int(rand()*10)+1));d=(rand()*8000+80)/wl;for (i=0;i<d;i++) {for (j=0;j<wl;j++){printf("a")};for (j=0;j<wl;j++){printf("z")}; };};};' | aplay -c 2 -r 48k

Been using Ubuntu Unity LTS 16.04 for a week now and decided to try out other distributions today.

Fedora looked amazing but felt weird and slow, Debian's repositories were too outdated for my needs and Kubuntu was bugging out with my display setup.

Ended up installing Mint xfce and hot damn it's fast, way faster than Unity. Sure it looks and feels like Windows XP, which I'm not very fond of, but it's so fast I don't care. I had tried Cinnamon before and did not like it so this really took me by a surprise.

I wish Linux worked on my laptop. I've tried everything but I don't think its wireless and audio hardware is supported.

You don't need KDE, there's a patch for GTK2 that allows thumbnails in the file dialog (check if your distro has a package for it). For Firefox you'd need to compile it with the GTK2 flags, for Chromium I believe it already uses GTK2 by default.

But doing >>59849238 is better, it just takes a while to get used to.

Friends. Is there any way to get thubnails in the GTK filepicker? I would go compiling if there's a patch and some kind anon would hold my hand, or, is the only solution KDE? I actually like GTK, at least as backend for my i3 config and I don't wanna switch just because of a filepicker problem. Also why is this still a thing? Years back when I was on Windows I already knew about the "filepicker meme", seems that this bug is now 14 years old and still no fix? What are they thinking? Why don't we go to the GNOME irc and tell them to do some work?
Thanks.

So tomorrow my hdd should be arriving, and I'm going to be installing a distro onto it. Would mint or ubuntu be a better distro for a beginner? I think mint looks really slick on cinnamon, especially the newest version of it, but I read that mint was compromised not long ago and could still be breached. Mint isn't compromised. Someone hacked their site and posted a bad ISO for like one day before it got taken down. There isn't anything wrong with the distro itself.

Mint is basically ubuntu under the hood, but it's based on the LTS so it isn't as bleeding edge. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. It is possible to install Cinnamon on Ubuntu as well.

Personally I use Mint.

A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness - not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean "security breaker." Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are "crackers."

Pardon me for one moment. What you are calling Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I have nicknamed it, GNU plus Linux. Linux isn't an operating system by itself, but it is just another part of the GNU system, which has been extended in functionality via various GNU components (including GNU's shell utilities and corelibs) which only then fit the definition of a complete operating system as outlined by POSIX.

There are many people today who are running the GNU operating system without even being aware of it. Through a strange turn of events, a misnomer has emerged where people refer to a widely used version of the GNU system as "Linux", unaware that the proper name for the system they run is the GNU operating system.

Now while they are in fact using Linux, it is only one component of the system that they run. Linux is used as the kernel: the part of an operating system which distributes a machine's resources to other programs which request them. While this functionality is essential for the successful functioning of a system, it cannot function on its own, it needs an operating system within which it can carry out its functions. Linux is commonly paired with the GNU operating system: the entirety of the system is GNU with the addition of Linux, or GNU/Linux. Every single "Linux Distribution" is actually a distribution of GNU/Linux.

my 2cents on systemd: I don't fall for the botnet memes and I don't care about unix philosophy and whatever, but I'd say that systemd making dependencies on so many programs is actually a problem - it doesn't affect the experience of a random users, but surely it will have some vital impact on the complete ecosystem after a while, a least when people who basically shouldnt care, dont care

Free software means software that respects the user's freedom.

There are four essential freedoms that the user of software should always have:

Freedom 0 is the freedom to run the program however you wish.
Freedom 1 is the freedom to study the source code of the program and change it to make the program do as you wish.
Freedom 2 is the freedom to distribute copies of the program to others when you wish. This includes republication of the program.
Freedom 3 is the freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others when you wish. This includes republication.

If you have all four of these essential freedoms, then the program is free software, which means that the social system of the distribution of the program is an ethical system that respects the freedom and community of the users.

If one of these freedoms is missing, then the program is proprietary software, meaning that it keeps the users divided and helpless, and gives the developer power over the users. This is an injustice. Proprietary software should not exist and should not be used.

If you want to have freedom, the only way you can have it while using computers is by rejecting proprietary software.

Nope. In fact I think OpenSUSE team is devoted/paid to maintain their point releases which means a higher level of stability overall. It means updating libreoffice won't really damage the system (See Arch). It's very unlikely that SUSE will cut ties with OpenSUSE.

If OpenSUSE were to die (theoratically) I'd move to Fedora or Korora. Or Ubuntu.

This is the biggest meme ever. For me, WiFi actually works better on Linux than windows (ath10k. The windows driver is cancer and constantly drops connection. While it is proprietary, the kernel firmware just werks with network manager.)

CentOS is literally exactly the same, but without the red hat support. I'd honestly recommend just using centos for free unless you need red hat's support.

For me it's the exact opposite. Atheros and Intel drivers run at less than half the speed they do on windows and it doesn't matter what card I use.

Centos is based on red hat enterprise source code, so it's very stable with out of date libraries and packages (it doesn't really matter) and old kernels. Fedora is independent, and has much newer packages, and tends to get new features that eventually go to red hat. Fedora is bad for servers. IMO centos and Debian stable are the best distros for servers, red hat if you want professional support.

all versions of gnome 3 look literally the same
they're all tablet oriented
they all waste vertical space
none of them have taskbars (I mean real taskbars, not that applel dock bullshit, and yes, I know that there's an extension for that, but that puts the taskbar on the bottom, vasting even more valuable vertical space)

It's called Linux, became you can have a Linux system without GNU, and still run all the same programs, but they won't run without the Linux kernel. Linus calls it Linux, and he's the final decision maker on these matters. GNU/Linux is an unwieldy name, and basically everyone, from normies to Red Hat and the kernel maintainers calls it Linux. Not to mention, calling it Linux makes it clear that the kernel is the important part worth recognising, but GNU/Linux disregards other important parts, such as Xorg and systemd.

The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

Every review I have seen of the ryzen linup in linux have been fantastic, especially if you're going to be doing alot of compiling. I would guess that the r5 lineup is more of the same. Ram speed seems to be the bottleneck in ryzen systems, so just get high speed memory and you should be fine.
