yeah no

and i'm pretty sure there are actual competent companies with good uptime who can beat that price
>>
>>59846907
After a few months of that payment plan you could have simply purchased a 1TB drive with a one time payment, shill.
>>
>>59846907
>paying for the privilege of giving some NSA front company control of your data
>>
>>59846907
Anything over a year is 6.99 for electricity when you could of bought the drive.
>>
>>59846979

Literally not a factor unless you're a pedo uploading illegal material
>>

>$7.70 a month x 12 months per year
>$92.40 a year with no control over how my data is stored, what hardware it runs on, etc etc etc
I'd rather build a cheap NAS/VPN setup for $50 more and run it forever with full control over my data.

Also,
>onedrive software only copies the data
>the data that you're supposedly storing in the cloud is still taking up 1TB of drive space

Nah.
>>

Yeah there are. Example, Backblaze will do unlimited backups for $50 a year.
>>
>>59847099
You can literally buy a 1TB external hard drive for cheaper than a year of cloud botnet
>>
>>59847003
>>59847026
Not him and I'd never recommend or use Onedrive, but you're comparing local storage with remote/online storage, it's not the same.
>>
>>59847127
local storage can be "remote/online storage"?
>>
>>59847127
Why would you want online storage
Buy a flash drive with a key ring for a fraction of the yearly cost
>>
>>59847099
no
there was some cloud backup service, i think it was microsoft's, which (without user's knowledge or consent, iirc) made backed up documents publicly accessible to anyone who used the search bar at the front page of the website. so ssn's, cc's, logins/passwords, corporate trade secrets were easily publicly discoverable with simple searches. too lazy to find an article about it because the only reason you typed out your post was to get replies anyway and you aren't actually interested in this.
>>
>>59847138
Not really. It can't be local and remote at the same time.

>>59847166
>Why would you want online storage

Yes you can

Unless you're an applecuck
>>
>>59847182
Yes, it was MS and their Office online or something like that, about a week ago.

Also a couple of years ago MS admitted that they look at people's files, at what content they're uploading.
Of course all providers can look at unencrypted files, but only MS could be so clumsy to admit it and don't even feel a bit of shame or the need to apologize.
>>
>>59847278

>>

>For unencrypted storage you don't own

Why in the world would you not just get a 1 TB hdd? You can get them for cheaper than 1 year of that cloud storage, and then you and only you have access to it, you can encrypt it, and you have access even with no internet.
>>
>>59847286
i just assume all cloud providers at least scan all files uploaded to their servers against known cp and malware. i mean, it IS their servers, and they DO have that right to know what people are uploading to it, and they are potentially liable for bad shit. they shouldn't apologize for that.

now, idk what kinds of research they are developing based on this or other bullshit. but if all these "file backup solutions" or whatever you tech ninnies call them were so open about what they do with your files, people might be more interested in shying away from them or with utilizing encryption.
>>
>>59847384
>i just assume all cloud providers at least scan all files uploaded to their servers against known cp and malware.
All that is done automatically anyway. Only edge cases are handled by humans.
But in this case, it wasn't about any illegal or malicious content. It was just about some users uploading more data than the usual. And MS had to take a peek and tell the world. They have the right to do it, but it's still stupid and clumsy.

And you should always encrypt the data wherever you're uploading. This isn't my main problem with MS vs other providers. They're just a bad company and their products suck, even more than they used to. W10 sucks, their online services suck. It's all so half assed and buggy.

>>
>>59847578
How?
>>
>>59847623
With a home server
>>
>>59847594
As said before, its a stupid thing to do and an even stupider thing to admit, but they do have the right to do so. But your not microsoft, your not even a company for that matter, you dont have an 'ethical obligation' to keep peoples data private. Companies kind of do, especially if your paying for it.
>>
>>59847651
Doesn't the cost to run and maintain a dedicated home server exceed the cost of cloud storage?
>>
>>59847116
Microsoft sell theirs on being 'integrated'. So the idea being you dont need to go to a certain site to upload your files, you just click a button and it does it for you.
Of course its not always that simple, nor are a couple of seconds worth that much more money, but you'd be surprised how many people are tricked by it.
>>
>>59847728
i do NOT think its a stupid thing for them to do

its a nasty unpleasant thing. kind of like human excrement, but it's necessary for them to do it in order to maintain and keep their services up and operational.

actually, cock.li's "How Can I Trust You" statement comes to mind here

but you are right, it is very stupid for them to talk about it. people don't want to know or think about the fact that their data is getting rifled through, whether its by robot's crawling and making hashes, or if its done by human eyes. talking about this would turn people away from their service. even if they do instead go to a service that does the exact same thing only they don't talk about it.
>>
>>59847740
I'd be using it either way, so no. Even if I was just using it as a cloud storage substitute, the only reason it costs more to leave running is my choice in hardware. If I had built one with the power bill in mind it'd certainly be cheaper per month than 1TB on OneDrive.
>>
>>59847809
I was referring to just humans looking at it. Pretty much every service that uses any kind of file transfer does a scan, and most people are fine with that.
But yeh, my wording wasnt great. Its stupid to admit, but not necessarily stupid to do. Maybe bad or wrong is a better word in terms of them doing it in the first place, unless theres a genuine reason.

Good statement though, fair point
>>
>>59847889
there are certainly cases where human snooping is necessary

but to be fair there is likely a lot of unnecessary, unethical human snooping on the part of ms who are keeping tabs on what kinds of documents people are creating and uploading and what kind of content is in them. there is probably a building full of pajeets who get paid to read through a random selection of people's documents all day long and have to rate and categorize them

then again they are probably doing it the google way and training computers to do this job

kind of like the captcha i just filled out
>>
>>59847979
Theres a lot of cases where it is necessary yeh. If thats the case, or its ai looking through it, I dont have a problem with it.
I think pretty much every company that has a fairly large user base are using ai to sift through everything thats uploaded, people take more time and cost more money.
>>
>>59846907
the standard "50 gigs for 2 bucks a month" plan is a lot more suited for my needs.

This is spinning rust with expected life of 4 years, $60
Spinning rust is still faster uploading and downloading from the "cloud" off of a wifi or even ethernet connection
>>
A 1 TB external hard drive costs between $50 and $75. Assuming we pay on the higher end of the spectrum, buying an external over using the cloud would pay for itself after just 11 months. If we consider the value of your time for not having to wait for your files to be transferred over the network (USB 3.0 isn't that great, but it's a hell of a lot faster than sending a file from across the fucking country), it might pay for itself a bit before that.

And if you want to share files with people, there are plenty of temporary file storage websites that are free. You don't need to keep something on someone else's computer all the damn time. Local is good.

There exists a law in the US that if 4 people are in a car, and one leaves to rob a store, all 4 people are culpable of the crime that one person committed. It's guilty by association.

Hence, Microsoft has the right to at least check for CP and Malware, lest they become complicit in the CP/malware trading.
