I just bought an R9 290 for 120 bucks, but since I have an E8400 I'm looking for a cheap upgrade. Found an i7 920 with motherboard and 6 GB memory for 80 bucks, good deal?
Upgrade set willing to buy for 80 bucks: P6T SE, Core i7 920, 6GB 1600MHz OCZ
GPU I bought:: Asus R9290-DC2-4GD5

how about a chinked xeon
$10 for quad core and you don't have to change the mobo

Sounds like a good deal desu.

Mmm sounds like a viable option!! Thanks for the advice. Cheaper, easier, and same performance?

That sounds pretty good, especially if you overclock the 920.

Any S 775 CPU is going to massively bottleneck the 290, it's best to just Jump ship to a new platform at this point.

Not even close to the same performance.

q9400 at 4GHz.

No money, just bought a home.

Not reasonable
You could go for a g4560 and some cheap motherboard and then upgrade later to a better cpu

Slightly slower.

Depending on your board, it might also be difficult to go above 4GB of memory.
IMO it's better to save the money for a more substantial upgrade later than to change to another slightly less outdated platform.

You do realize that i7-920, despite being a meme processor for ages, is not a speed demon either, right?

If you can get the mobo separately, there are cheap chink xeons for LGA 1366 that are faster than a non-OC'd i7-920, e.g. W3565. I don't know if they fit in any board though.

- Q9400@4GHz is a fucking housefire
- might as well try to overclock a xeon, it's cheaper so you'll lose $5 less when your house burns down
