It is amusing to learn that American English is the original English. Insecure faggots from UK required a new spelling system to affirmate themselves and thus, UK English has born.
Is UK English is closer to French? Colour, parlour, etc. all the unnecessary (U)s seem like a leftover from its romance language influences.

Actually, the English in the UK was influenced a lot by Continental European forces in the 1800s. That's why it has a non-rhotic sound ("er"s come out as "uh"s unless followed by a vowel). That also explains why there are pockets of rhoticity still present in England (albeit shrinking) in Cornwall there abouts
