I already have NI Multisim, Matlab, various Pspice software
Anything else?

A college education. Also power electronics is boring as fuck. Go for literally anything else like semiconductor physics, or high frequency radio, or robotics and control systems.

Is it actually good or some hipster meme?

I have a BS already, and from the courses I took it seemed that power electronics was the purest form of electrical engineering. Semiconductor physics? What would that entail? Working at some fab-lab with dreadful hours? HF radio? I suppose that's an alright option; any software for that? Robotics seems to require a lot more programming than I'm comfortable with; control systems are used in power electronics as well

already got that covered senpai

You are going to be an engineer, why would you want to waste time on a hobby distro? Just use Debian testing, its GOAT.

Work will pay for legit copies of everything you need.
Matlab, or its opensource alternative octave, are incredibly useful in school, but for actual engineering work, I haven't heard of them being used much (some other practicing engineers chime in please).

But to get into a job I need to have experience, thus I want to practice beforehand. Any specific software you know of?
