I got a Gmail address with just my last name.

I was invited to the Gmail beta back when it was still 1GB of storage. About 7-8 months later it got doubled to 2GB. I've now got several secondary accounts that I link to my primary. But all are gmail.

I can't send e-mail to places like hotmail/microsoft live. Doesn't matter if you use DKIM and do everything else right, quite a few mailservices want to be their own little islands and only accept mail from other big players.

I've been thinking awhile about getting away from gmail and moving towards my own setup running my own server. I was thinking something like just running OpenSMTPD and then downloading the mail locally and then deleting it from the server so to minimize the time the mail is sitting out there on a server to minimize the window of opportunity if hackers break into my mail server there wont be all my old mail there.
