If you are going to spend equal dollars on headphones vs. hifi speakers and amp, you'll get better sound for your money with headphones up until the stupid and unreasonable price brackets.in which case speakers will excel only because you can keep adding redundant "reinforcement" speakers, or otherwise create more sound pressure.

Needing more sound pressure is the only good reason imho to spend extraordinary amount of money on speaker systems. If and only if you have a huge space to fill should the price of your speaker setup exceed $1000 usd

I would say spending a lot on your home theater speakers in general is sort of wasteful. The sound is mixed to sound like the rumble zone from the get-go. even cheap aio soundbar and woofers do a fine job with that shit.

I think spending tons to hear prerecorded music makes a bit more sense but still its kind of stupid. there is nothing you can do to change the track, you're only hearing it through different levels of distortion and pressure. big fucking deal, I hope your ears prefer the special consideration

If you are a musician or and you intend to record directly off your speakers, or otherwise play live through those speakers, then you should probably consider ponying up for professional shit.

just my .02. As long as your speakers don't sound like total shit, there's no reason to spend hard earned cash to slightly color your complex waveforms. if the song is good it will still be good, if its shitty it will keep on being shitty.

And since I don't live alone on a secluded estate, I ended up using my speakers very rarely and eventually I just sold them and never bought any replacement.
