Uh, new and delete ARE manual memory management, the only real difference from malloc and free (apart from being incompatible with them) is that new calls the constructor on non-POD types, while malloc just allocates memory for them. Now, if you had a language that JUST uses new (like Java or JavaScript) without delete, that's not manual memory management, but if you allocate with new and then call delete on it when you're done, that's still manual memory management, just at a higher level of abstraction.
