Xfce should be the default DE for Ubuntu.
It's easy to use, lightweight and has a very nice aesthetics.

It's even familiar for people migrating from Windows.
>>
>>59797119
Have they fixed the issues which turns off the display until the next reboot every time you put the lid down?
>>
>>59797119
It's the default DE in Xubuntu.

Also, they need to fix thunar.
>>
>>59797119
I agree, Andrei. But if babbybuntu gets involved, it's bound to get bloated real quick.

Just leave them out of it before its ruined to attract the lowest common denominator.
>>
>>59797119
Even lxde would be a better choice than Gnome, to be honest.
>>
>>59797178
Ew, no. Then just have openbox.
>>
>>59797192
That's not very normie-friendly.
Ubuntu is for the end-users, too.
>>
>>59797192
> Ew, no.
>>
>>59797119
Wrong. Either mate or Kde would be better.
>>
>>59797214
You can configure openbox to be very normie friendly, just have no settings anywhere they can accidentally fuck up.
>>
it just doesn't look this good.
>>
>>59797224
Mate is a fork of Gnome and built by the Linux Mint folks, so nope.

Kde is too heavy.
>>
>>59797222
Right, thanks for proving my point.
>>
>>59797239
And that'd be lxde, in a way.

Most Linux users use xfce.

Why not Cinnamon, other than removing Mint's reason to exist?
>>

Agreed, Cinnamon would be better.

pretty sure most people use GNOME

MATE is not and was never built by the Mint team. The only developer related to Mint on the MATE team is Vlad Orlov. There are more devs related to Arch on the team than Mint.

You expect people migrating from Windows to want to use i3?

I'm still getting it, espacialy on sshfs.

In all honesty, xfce looks ugly as fuck. Unity is way better than this garbage.

I have the same shit. Every time I lock the screen it turns pink and changes to blue if I press a random key.

I suspect it has to do with lightlocker. I didn't have it on debian or fedora. If it really bothers you and you also find XScreenSaver disgusting I recommend i3lock.

Your pic isn't default Xfce, it's Xubuntu desktop, which Xfce shipped precustomized and with select themes and packages. You can install it at any time in Ubuntu via the xubuntu-core package. So why include it as a default when users can install it at any time?
>>
>>59800808
On xubuntu? Which screen lcoker do you use?
>>
>>59800892
Nigga you are dumb. Ubuntu is replacing unity with gnome 3 in the next release. That's why he wants it to be default.
>>

>>59800353
oh, that's great, that shit drove me nuts
>>
Default xfce is ugly as a sin and would put normis out of linux instantly. The only pretty out of the box xfce is Manjaro.

That being said, Mate is better in every conceivable way.
>>
>>59801424
And who cares? You can install whatever DE you want, there is no "default".
>>
>>59797119
gtfo with your canonishill OS
>>
Gnome 3 is good tho. It is also refreshingly slightly different from Windows, while still being very easy to use.

Its not like normies loved GNU/Linux back when every default DE was kinda similar to windows (in the sense that it functioned in a similar desktop-oriented manner) (desktop as in desktop, not as in desktop PC)
>>
>>59797119
xfce is indeed the best DE, which is really tragic in a way thinking of all the wasted resources that went into DEs like Unity, Gnome3x, KDE etc.
>>
>>59801694
LXDE is also pretty good. Have been looking into it because of some xfce bugs.
>>
>>59797119
Just tried it in my LMDE VM and it was way more comfy than I remembered.

Still prefer MATE tho, feels more robust somehow.

Is your main machine a rasberry pi? If not, then dumb argument.
Kwin has gpu acceleration built in.
It also depends on it, but for most computers, this makes it faster.
Stuff like krunner also makes the system a lot lighter, at least for me.

But I agree, a lot of stuff is heavier.
yakuake and konsole is heavier than other terminal emulators.
Dolphin is heavier than other file managers.
Kate is heavier than some other editors.
The list goes on.

But you can switch tools if you want to.
I believe the kde tools are generally better.
Kate is the best graphical editor, dolphin is the best file manager and krunner is the best launcher.
>>
>>59808067
I find it handy, before I knew tiling managers existed I was irritated by having to regularly resize/move windows, or be limited to 4 corners at most that I can snap to in windows.

On smaller monitors or a laptop there is little gain, but on a larger monitor at 4K it is quite useful since there is a large workspace available.
