What do you value most in your computer?

It's the CPU for me. Even if you're a gaymer.

>Drives the entire computer
>Can make a bigger difference price/performance wise than a GPU can

an i5 vs an i7 can easily gain you 15-20% in performance. a 1060 vs a 1070 is literally like 10-12 FPS.

>>59794314
Does it justify spending $120 more though?

At least spending $70-80 more on an i7, you're constantly using it.

I think the 1070 and 1080 are memes. Most games now-a-days look great on medium or high settings. Ultra is for 14 year olds who like to show off what their mom bought them.

"Ch-Check it out guys, I'm getting 100 FPS on ultra settings gaming on 1440p!"

The 1060 or 480 is more than enough for most gaymers. If all you need is GPU power, why not just buy an i3 or better yet just buy a console.
>>

Fuck off with your autistic linux neckbeatd anime horseshit
>>

>>
>>59794348
I think it just depends. For sure an i7 will beat any i5 in video encoding. But for gaming it depends on the game. Many games won't benefit at all from the extra threads, but many will.

I actually just bought a gtx1060 and my entire library can run in ultra at 1080p and AA cranked all the way up. I don't play first person shooters though so maybe that's why. My most demanding game is Dirt Rally and it runs beautifully now.
>>
>>59794431
I have a 1060 as well.

I think at least 1080p, a 480 or 1060 is enough for most people. I heard an i5 and 1070 get bottlenecked on certain games, especially when memers on /g/ and Reddit tell them it's the better option for gaming.

There's honestly little difference between Ultra and high settings in games now-a-days besides the huge FPS drop. In BF1 I averaged 92 FPS on ultra, everything maxed with my 1060. I turned it down, the game looked the same but I averaged about 122.
>>
>>59794431
Actually no games will care about the extra threads. The only performance difference in games is the 100 mhz clock difference.

Why not the 1050? If you really are as non-autistic as you claim, a 1060 is a POINTLESS waste of money (you can save 50 to 90 dollars at least), a 1050 can run anything with normal graphics.

And you are not "constantly using the CPU", you don't use its power when you are shitposting on 4chan, if you only play gaymes like you probably do, you utilize the power of the CPU as often as the power from the GPU, and if you are ok playing on normal settings, an old i5 or a modern i3 are more than enough to play correctly, or... are you an autistic graphic whore 14 year old?
>>
CPU as well. But mostly because if your CPU is bottlenecking you, you get really stuttery framerates instead of just lower (constant) framerates. If you have a shit GPU, most of the times you just get lower (constant) framerates.
Constant framerate > inconsistent framerate.
>>
>>59794487
I got my 1060 for $240.

If you can get a 1070 for cheap, then go for it. My point is that it literally makes no sense to spend $370-$400 on a 1070 for 1080p gaming (Which is what most people use). Especially at 144hz.

Your CPU is the most important thing in your computer. Spending the extra $70-$80 on an i7 will give you vastly superior results vs spending $125-$150 more on a GPU. Especially when it's an i5, especially when you're playing on the Ultra meme.

Enjoy that bottleneck laddo.
>>
>>59794052
>Can make a bigger difference price/performance wise than a GPU can
Maybe of the choice is between and FX 8350 or other garbage tier CPU Vs an i5
>an i5 vs an i7 can easily gain you 15-20%
Most of that is from the 7700K higher clocks, the difference between a 7600 and a 7700 is pretty minimal apart from a few edge cases.
>a 1060 vs a 1070 is literally like 10-12 FPS
Depending on the baseline performance that's a pretty huge fucking difference going from say, 50 to 60 fps is a 25% increase.

Stop subtlety shilling the "you need an i7 for gaming" meme. You can have a (You), free on the house from me.

$240 is a lot of money, that is my point, that you randomly think $400 is too much but $240 isn't because it suits "you" best, the thing is that you FELL for the Ultra meme, just not for the 4k meme, because the 1060 is the perfect card for the autistic fuck that wants to play everything on "LE ULTRA" at 1080p.

When for $110-140 dollars a 1050 is more than enough to play most games on medium-high settings correctly, why spend more that that?

And exactly because of that, is that I also don't need to spend 80 more dollars on an i7 CPU, its overkill for a normal GPU playing on normal non-autistic settings.

I just want to come back from work and play games that look nice (as they would on a console), don't stutter and have some fun, you know, like a normal non autistic person, so not (you)

>>
>>59795046
Then why not buy a console?

If all you do is game and shitpost on 4chan, then a console would be much better.

You're going to use an i7 to it's potential much more than you'll ever push a 1070. It's just a fact lad.

Most important criteria for me in hardware is how well it's compatible with Linux. It's been a big determining factor in my purchases. For example, I have been buying computers with Intel HD graphics for years because Intel open sourced this drivers and I dont do any gaming so it just werked perfectly for me I havent had to put up with any of the bullhshit thats involved in keeping closed drivers working. I bought HP printer only because they open sourced their drivers.

motherboard, it has most of the io on it and is not easily replaces without fresh installs of everything

after that comes a strong cpu, when hardware decoded fails, the cpu is what it falls back to.

followed by gpu as you can have hardware decode or assisted use

ram, ssd, hdd are all required things, and are all largely you have it you are good, ryzen requires fast ram for now, but is likely going to be an issue dealt with in the revision.

The decisions I've made on what to personally do to the computer, the memories that I have created, files and in my own head. The operating system I choose to use, and after I retire old hardware it feels the same as a kid that realizes he can give up his favorite stuffed animal and doesn't have to carry it everywhere with him.

I would say the memories created using computers and the emotions tied to the whole experience is worth more than any one specific component on it's own.

I like to think of the retired hardware as something that my life was sort of played through, the electricity went through the hardware to create the sensory memorial experience in my mind, so it has to be worth more than selling it or throwing it away.
