Sup /g/,
Can any Canadian developers offer some insight here? I'm about to graduate uni with a CS degree, but I have been self-studying programming/networking/security/etc for the past 10 years or so, so my skills are pretty sharp.
My issue is my criminal record -- I have a single common assault summary conviction. I've only ever applied for an internship in the public sector. The technical interviews/tests were fairly easy to pass, but I was denied a TS clearance due to being on probation.
With that said: do I stand any chance of obtaining employment in the private sector (looking specifically to move to GTA), or should I reconsider my options entirely? Was thinking if I couldn't gain employment in BC or Quebec (afaik they can't discriminate based on unrelated offences), I'd be better off just doing labour jobs for the next few years until I can get a pardon. Would especially love to hear from any Canadians or Americans who also have records. Thanks /g/.

if you don't work in something related to your degree, it will become worthless
not every place will do a background check I guess
government = forget it.
everywhere else = depends.

Depends on what? Company size? I haven't seen too many postings where they explicitly indicate that a check would be performed, so even then I'm not too sure...
I don't think I've seen a single job posting specifying a background check honestly. None of the devs i've worked with here (GTA) have ever even had it been a question because the desire to find someone who isn't absolute shit is so much greater.

Just start your own company or go do freelance stuff. No one will ask about a criminal record there
