Are whiteboard tests a meme? I can't think of a single time knowing an algorithm or prime number has been useful. And every interview I have starts with a whiteboard walking in and asking me to sum the primes to two million

I wouldn't say 100 percent meme but if you can't at least do those then you should probably leave.
stupid whiteboardposter
It's an exercise in problem solving, not how fast you can google things.
Honestly, if you can't figure out prime numbers, it means you're a retard who never learned grade school math and I certainly wouldn't want you working here if that were the case.

for i in range(1, 10000001):
for j in range(1, 1001):
if not i % j: break
if j*j > i:
r += i
break
You're welcome.

misread as one million, should be 2000001 and 1416.

It's not about the actual question. Whether or not you know the answer is an indicator for many other things, such as your education pedigree, your awareness about industry trends (do you live under a rock?), whether you have the work ethic to prepare for whiteboard interviews, and obviously many "soft" skills like communication, whether you can explain an idea to a fellow colleague without sperging out, whether you have bad breath, body odour etc.
It's desu the perfect software dev interview format.
