Kde is not better, it's just different. I use both, btw, each one has its own advantages.
For gnome it will be, i say, stability and customizablity (yeah, really. It supposed to be kde advantage, but current plasma is not even close to ability to change look and behavior of every single element using simple css).
For kde it will be flexibility and options. Gazillions of options you can change all about window manipulation. Transactions, opacity, buttons, global menu, placing. Kde is fucking powerful when it comes to that.
But modern plasma is pretty unstable so expect glitches.

Ubuntu's predicted Unity flavor will be something like the app people install on their Windows 8 to get the start button back.

Some people will install it, the people who don't will have to learn the unproductive new thing introduced by their OS.

Some will hate the new thing and look for the alternatives, and switch to another OS.

Some of those switched will remember why they switched to Ubuntu years ago.

I used unity and still do, I just never really saw a need to post about it. I like having a distribution that needs minimal set up so I can use it to do work instead of playing with my operating system.

Really at the end of the day your OS is just a tool. All linux distros are more or less the same (give or take a package manager) and learning keyboard shortcuts for any environment doesn't take too much effort.

Honestly, I thought Unity was outdated. It was made for netbooks, which are practically extinct now. The premise of having a universal menubar was to save on vertical real estate on netbook screens. Same goes for the side bar. Windows nailed the desktop metaphor to perfection.

Now, for all of Unity's shortcomings, I still prefer it over GNOME. I abhor GNOME. It's just all around garbage implementation. Top bar is mostly dead space - that's why they put a clock in a middle. You push upper left to bring up the Apps SCREEN, which is a proven failure of a UI on desktop since it just doesn't work for big screens, then it search bar is at the middle of the screen - that's just retarded.

Serious question, what will be the point of Ubuntu in 2018? Who would chose Ubuntu 18.04 with Gnome 3 over Debian with Gnome 3, or Fedora 20-something with Gnome 3?
It seems to me like they've committed sudoku by killing off Unity, as bad as people say it is, a lot of people use it and it's a defining characteristic of Ubuntu.
The only thing they still have going for them is Snappy, but it would not surprise me if they kill that too in favor of Flatpak.

Why is Ubuntu going with Gnome? They should make Cinnamon the default DE.

The Unity/Gnome 2 debacle is why I switched to Mint. MATE is just a fork of Gnome 2, which should never have been abandoned. Ubuntu went full retard forcing Unity on a userbase that didn't want it, and Gnome 3 is just not configurable enough.

Gnome 2 was the perfect blend of usability, configurability and eye-candy ability. There's no real point to using Ubuntu MATE Edition tho when you can just use Mint instead.

Correct, Cinnamon is really just a Gnome 3 shell.
KDE went full retard after about 4.6 or whenever it was they introduced Plasma. Prior to that, I had preferred KDE. Gnome 2 was comfy as fuck and I never wanted anything else. Then the Gnome devs went full retard with Gnome 3 and Ubuntu went full retard with Unity, so everyone sane switched to Mint and got MATE, the fork of Gnome 2 that's still actively developed.

Really, gnome is good if you are open minded, i got into linux when gnome 2 was everywhere and loved it. of course when unity appeared i hated it and shit AND also hated the idea of gnome 3 so i just stayed in gnome 2 the most i could. the thing is that years later gnome 3 is fucking great and awesome, it could really be the first part to a "linux year". just get used how it works, it's so fucking easy, if you want to open a program or change windows, just point the mouse to the upper left corner, type it and bam, that's it.
