> purposely gimping your computing power by not updating to a modern cutting edge desktop

Linux is for power users not casual shits like you, you're like those old fucks who are still on windows XP because they are scared to change. Power users will want new and improved desktops with high quality effects and innovative ideas, not some windows 95 clone. It's almost impossible to get any real work done on xfce because I have to spend five to six hours setting up compositors and compiz fusions to have anything even remotely similar to advanced desktops like kde and gnome. If I have to spend hours making a desktop work correctly then I am not getting any actuall work done myself. So xfce is nothing but a broken toy for the unemployed who have time to rice thier desktops all day. I don't. I have work to do. I am a power user so I expect a desktop to come with effects and usability built in. There is no reason I should have to messs with config files or terminals or anything like I have to do on xfce because xfce is not a full desktop. I suggest you get with the times champ. If you want to be a productive member of the linux community you better use a real desktop. Fuck ass.

All the shit is hidden from the users because the users job is to use the god damn software and no fuck with it. The user should be able to load up the computer and get to work, not fuck with a huindred million config files before they can even write "hello world", apple knew that, windows knows that, and linux is just getting there. But it's still not great for desktop work.

Windows apps look like giant ads. Windows apps are filled with real ads. Windows is adware.

Windows is spyware. They participated in the NSA PRISM program.

You're a cuck for using windows.

It has horrible font rendering too. Windows really does get in your way and Linux stays out of your way. Windows is for cucks and Linux is for power users.

Sorry, but it's the truth.

There are nothing wrong with ads. That's how things work nowdays. Websites, youtube channels, podcasts, radio, television, all work based of ads, why shouldn't operating systems. Being against ads is stupid. These aren't just random ads, but they are targeted ads, so they are meant to show you things you will be interested in. Are you against seeing new things you're interested in? That's why you're on this forum isn't it? To see news and talk about things you are interested in? Ads are the same thing. And if you can see things that interest you and support software developers, then more power to them. I see as a smart move on the minds of these developers. If ads means better quality and free products, then ads should be welcomed because they are effectively support the software ecosystem. Do you remember the days when a copy of Windows would cost almost 200$? That's ridiculous. Now windows is free. Ads have liberated windows and they could do it to apple and even linux if people like you didn't bitch all the time. Linux would be smart to start including adds in their software, then free software could finally be have a realistic financial future lol instead of begging for people to donate. There are nothing wrong with ads.

Honestly I think all the people bashing GNOME and pushing KDE are paid microsoft shills.

GNOME is more sleek than windows and is actually a better desktop metaphor for most consumers.

KDE is a hodge-podge of menus and buttons and ugly programs, very similar to Windows. KDE will guarantee a bad first time linux experience when coming from windows.

Because GNOME tries to think different it feels like something new, not like a copy of windows.

Some people enjoy different desktops and interfaces. By and large though, full GUIs with pretty graphics and effects are for normalfags. It makes it easier for people to get things done without knowledge of the inner workings of the operating system.

Did nobody else notice that the date is September 11th?

RIP twin towers and that part of the pentagon that got crushed, also the brave men and women of flight 93 who chose to crash their plane into a field instead of trying to land it on the field.
>>
unity may be dead but gnome these days isn't much better
learn a proper tiling window manager and you'll never want to go back to the stacking trash typical plebeians get by with

Programs randomly crashing when their windows open.
Full screen programs have the same problem.
The desktop also hanged more than a few times.

I like using i3 when I'm using my notebook and I'm feeling too lazy to use my mouse.
I would never use it in my desktop or in any other circumstance, though.
Using a DE is simply better.

scaling sucks on tiling WMs on a hidpi screen, atleast without a lot of configuring.

i3 on wayland (sway) sucks a lot of dick. firefox tooltips are completely broken and seizure inducing, goddamn mouse support sucks because wayland offloads ALL the fucking input devices to libinput, which needs hooks from the WM. Sooooo now the wm dev has to create stubs for every single input device people are going to use it with.

I find that xfce is best out-of-box and the most productive DE.
There is no need to tweak panels, launchers or even themes as Greybird looks pretty good overall. (Paper icons looks better tho')
As for composition i just disable it as i don't have any need for shadows and fancy animations, i just want to get stuff done.

If your screen is tearing, then in most cases it is just disabled in the X.org config files, since they need to make config files that is safe for a wide array of hardware.

Quick fix for Intel HD screen tearing:
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Add the following and save the file

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

any distro not shipping gnome metapackage with gnome tweak tool by default should be regarded as meme desu. They should just integrate it into the gnome control center

I would use Xfce if it moved to Wayland, but development is so slow that it probably won't happen for another 10 years. The screen tearing is a faget and compton is a bad meme.

and tearing can be fixed without compton

There is also a compatible extension with more features for plasma. https://store.kde.org/p/1173112

kys.

KDE will never look as good (or perform as well) as GNOME.

Nah, it has implemented more features. Just check the github issues.

Gnome eats like 200mb more RAM than KDE on a fresh install. Probably more CPU too.

i am still trying to swallow the systemd debacle

not even kidding: I abandoned Linux when the thing was in full swing and still have not come back. The Unity news gave me hope, but from what I have researched, my only decent candidate to comeback is still gentoo

Dolphin file manager.
Easy to rice.

Well "acctually useful"
Imo it is pain in the ass to use without heavy tweaking.
It is also heavier than xfce, lxde or wms and doesn't offer stuff plasma does.
