It's not a difficult things to understand.

Black hats are like the guy who made Mirai. He fucked shit up only for his own personal gain. White hats are like penetration testers. Hackers with ethics that do it 100% legally. Grey hay hackers are the in between. For example, they may find a remote execution vulnerability in say Windows on their own time. Instead of selling it to the highest bidder, or making their own tool to fuck shit up, they just tell Microsoft.

I've never heard of the term grey hat since I grew out of edgy hacker shit long ago however I presume they are skids who don't have the balls / haven't covered their tracks well enough to do anything malicious.

I always thought grey hats were those who didn't particularly care to spend effort exploiting any vulnerabilities they found for personal gain but didn't care nearly enough to actually go out of their way to inform anyone about it.

Alternatively, those who would do stuff for the lulz, and actively try to find vulnerabilities but without trying to profit from it - aka edgy bored teenage neets.
