Mesa developer haagch has been working hard to add OSVR support to GNU/Linux and now a wayland compositor actually works (sort of).
It's now possible to play QTextEdit and other GNU/Linux applications on your VR headset.

I remember years and years ago when I first tried compiz and got a cube with all my virtual desktops. I was like WOW this is so cool. It wasn't exactly useful and didn't make it easier to work in a spreadsheet but damn it was cool.
I think this will be kind of the same deal.
I know he's using a HTC Vive and a OSVR HDK2 to develop this. I kind of doubt it's worth buying those just to use traditional desktop applications in a VR headset .. but I bet trying it or seeing it would be really cool.
