I would recommend using the foss ones,they're better most of the time
Amd >= Nvidia
Linux driver wise

Linux 4.8.0 has RX480 support and every kernel up from there to 4.11 have improved on it.
Don't know for other cards, but had minimal problems with r9 290 also.
The proprietary drivers were atrocious. Free ones were better, but still heavily hit-and-miss for compatibility, and somewhat unstable.
Switched to an Nvidia card with proprietary drivers and haven't had to worry about drivers since.

pic runs better on linux then windows by around 10 fps on my shitty laptop

I had Guildwars 2 running via wine with AMD drivers at a bit under my usual framerate (still 60+ though). Other games on steam seem to run fine as well. Selection should worry you more than drivers

The old open-source `radeon' driver is very stable and works well for 2D. 3D acceleration is pretty much a lottery and the deprecated proprietary `catalyst' driver used to give me almost 50% better performance.
I don't have any new AMD hardware (no new hardware in general, now that I think about it) so I can't test it myself, but the new free `amdgpu' driver should be almost as good as `radeon', if missing some features, but I've heard the proprietary `amdgpu-pro' is a bitch to get running.
If you want gay men, use Windows.
nVidia is a similar clusterfuck, btw.
Works for me. Can't really comment about the overall performance but it's not terrible imo
