I keep the guts of an old Core 2 Duo system boxed up in storage in case the urban market ever decides to go shopping at my place. Like you said, it would be plenty to get me buy until insurance pays out. I don't even use PCs for video playback anymore so it's not like I need much performance from it at all.

This makes me wonder: which was the year/generation of hardware that gave us systems which to this day are still perfectly serviceable? I'm thinking it was around 2007. Core 2 processors, DDR3 RAM, good hard drives.

A big part of what makes Q6600 so good is how well it overclocks, so your board will probably limit it quite a bit. Also it is pretty old at this point, so might be better to just invest that money into something more modern. Still, if you can find one cheap enough I'd say go for it.

Still using my Thinkpad T500 with a T9500, bought new in 2009 for university. Literally the only thing I run into day-to-day that gives me trouble are the 1080p YouTube videos. Seems that the ATI card does not help with those.

Speaking of the ATI card, I quit gaming years ago but it does still make quick work of older titles.
>>
>>59767066
i'd say that is a fair assumption

still see plenty of core2 systems in colleges/high schools alike around here

if not that, then definitely when LGA1366/LGA1156 rolled around. plenty of those systems are still up and running, and provide excellent usage

i mean shit, my x220 has a 2520m and does just about everything i need it to do with no signs of slowing down

Had a Q9400 as the spare system a couple months ago. I however wanted something a bit newer and sold it to initiate the process of buying parts for an LGA 1366 system. Couple months later I had the 1366 core components ($30 for a NIB DX58SO, $50 for 2 i7s and a bunch of ram for it (one was to flash it from the release bios to the latest bios), and lastly $60 to get a decent Hex-core).

I am gonna miss the 775 system though.

Sadly i ran out of funds. Most of what I had that went into the 1366 system came from selling the C2Q. Adding in a quadro or tesla compute card would require a new case and a new power supply, as the current case is a shitheap and the power supply is only adequate for a 4ghz core overclock and a slightly overclocked GTX 460.

No

Quadros are a waste of money for anything but Hollywood level production. They are not only entirely unneeded for hobbyist/self employment level work, they're a gigantic money sink and actually substantially slower rendering per dollar than a consumer GTX card.

Quadros power comes from scaling, and no hobbyist has 15 $6000 GPUs in a home render farm.

>My 2 duo can even handle The Witcher 3.

460 isnt the housefire, 460 was actually the good first gen fermi card. Its everything based off GF100 that were the housefires (GTX 480, GTX 470, GTX 465).

Besides, if I'm going to make this machine a compute rig, it will either be an OG Titan, or an AMD card based off the Tahiti die, as both have pretty good compute performance.

the biggest problem with the older processors is finding a motherboard capable of DDR3, and even then you're better off spending money on a system that can do DDR4 because of how expensive DDR3 is in comparison.

I don't know what the fuck happened to the memory market but it makes me realize that the best investments seem to be having motherboards that can accept older Xeons and ECC RAM.

I wish I would have bought an EVGA SR-X or similar board back in 2013 and just upgraded from there knowing what I know now about the CPU market in 2017.

Q9300**
>>
>>59769341
At $0.11 per kWh, it just isn't really an issue.

The Q6600 has a TDP of 105w.

105w 24/7 over 1 month is ~78 kWh.

At $0.11 per kWh that's about $8.50 per month of 24/7 use.

And almost no one is running their CPU at full load 24/7 anyway, so this is a retarded extreme circumstance that would be unlikely to occur during actual use.

I don't, I'm just saying it's too expensive for what it is. If the flood didn't happen then PC sales probably would have stalled even further because DDR3-based systems still have so much life left in them.

It almost makes me think they did it on purpose or something.

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8600 @ 3.33GHz here

Have to agree, I updated to this one a few years ago from a weak Core2 Duo. Don't really need more cores as most applications I use are single threaded and IIRC the quads have lower single thread performance.

I plan to upgrade this year but it's mostly because I have money to spend. The 8GB of RAM served me well.

... I have a GTX 960 and it's great for encoding things like game capture on the fly

It is NOT good for actual encoding of blurays and DVD's however as NEVNC uses fixed hardware encode options which don't allow you to adjust quality settings and other factors.

CPU encoding is always superior to a hardware encoder because hardware encoders lock in specific settings (since they're made of silicon that can ONLY do that specific function) where as a general purpose CPU can do any functions you tell it to (more complex functions simply add more time to your encoding time) but increase the visual fidelity of the final encode.

Essentially if you have the CPU power, a CPU encode will almost always be superior to a hardware encoder.

I wanted to buy a c2quad this weekend to swap out a c2duo that I have.

I was going to opt for a c2quad q9400.... do you think this Xeon L5420 will serve me better?

Second question, what would be my absolute best bet for a "new" upgraded processor to replace my c2d e8400?

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I'm new to PC building, but have been putting a lot of time into research lately.

I'll make a new thread on this sometime this weekend, but TL;DR... My university got rid of these, I grabbed em. They all still work. So far I moved a 4gb ddr3 stick into the one on the far right, to make a system which is a c2d e8400, win 7 pro, 500 GB 7200 rpm HD, total 8 GB of ddr3... Now I just wanted to upgrade CPU and add a graphics card.

Intel Xeon E5450 in my hacked LGA775 motherboard. Back in the day, you could get these used off eBay for a lot cheaper than Q9650s, and still install them on a desktop motherboard even though they're LGA771, by going at it with a dremel tool and putting a sticker on the bottom of the processor that swaps a couple pins.

Yeah. I'm never getting rid of this thing.

the biggest bottleneck though is my 3gb of ram and not the q6600. i was going to put together a new computer, but then i stopped playing entirely, and waited since ryzen was around the corner, but ended up getting the lab computer in the mean time and now i can't really justify upgrading.

Yeah, kid,
That's definitely the mentality smart people with good money have.
Lot's of sense there. Brimming with it, even.

>I couldn't possibly be implying that people with decent jobs aren't necessarily intelligent or caring of how their money actually gets used

My father has made 55+k a year pretty much since I was 3 years old. He still uses an athlon 64x2 5600+ to browse the web and play Flight Sim/Xplane 10, paired with a fucking Radeon 470 now.
Is he smart? Sure. Is he intelligent with how he uses his funds+free hobby time?
Fuck no.
And neither are the people in your example.
>>
>>59778089
Wow, that is truly some narrow sighted autism.
I can't speak for everyone, but this hobby of mine is by far my cheapest. Putting time and money into a building track car and bike is certainly more expensive than tossing a few hundred bucks into some budget pc builds for fun. To each their own I suppose, but when you get older, maybe you will learn to see things differently.
>>
>>59778180
Ah well, so sorry I haven't hit the age that a love and hobby of mine has turned into a throwaway.

For what it's worth I'm using a 7 year old (1366 xeon) platform with a GPU that was midrange circa 2012.
FWIW I've been waiting since 2014 to put together a Zen platform computer - and have now decided to wait until "Zen2" and further, the 7nm GPU cards much after that.
FWIW my daily driver is an 8 year old Prius
FWIW my track car is a highly modified '93 3000GT VR-4, and my Ninja 350EX needs a complete overhaul in about 4000 miles.

For what it's worth I'm enjoying what I've been able to reasonably afford before, not after, I get so old as to see it all as a waste of time. Maybe in fifteen years I'll put a bit of my investment money into my house before it starts falling apart.
For what it's worth, there's a limit to the absolute usability of computer technology, beyond which it was in fact much more worth it to replace with something faster.

But hey what do I know. I've only turned $1500 of bitcoin into $45,000 and put myself through school. I've only turned $25,000 cash into $150,000 of stock in AMD alone. I've only just started working for myself last year. I've only just become so profitable that my five year outlook makes me a multi millionaire.

And I'm still riding a Prius to get groceries, driving a 25 year old car against new corvettes, and typing this reply on a 6 year old processor.
For what it's worth.

If your board supports 1333 MHz FSB and you mod S771 Xeon microcode into BIOS, all 5-series Xeons are essentially interchangeable.
L-series is for upgrading SFF machines or anything with those small Intel boxed coolers.
X-series is 100+ watts for like 15% more clock speed than E-series, they're only worth it if you already have a big cooler capable of handling that.

>>59779920
I don't think you can get any ULV parts for desktop for 10 bucks, and L-series Xeons aren't that cool anyway.
>>
>>59776885
