Is there any quick way to get the gist of C++? I'm decent at pajeet languages and even dabbed a bit into C++ and pointers years ago, but am still intimidated by this beast. I hate feeling like I have to read some massive amount of text on the language before I can do anything interesting.
So, what's the quick and dirty way of learning it?

Step 1: Learn C
Step 2: Learn Java (or C# or Swift or similar)
You should now be able to pick up C++ without too much difficulty.

just start writing, pretend it's C or some other similar language you may already know.
look up every single thing you do on cppreference.com and see if there's a better way to do it.
that's more or less how I learned it.

I suggest learning on the go while doing some projects/exercises, reference style. Reading a tutorial book from cover to cover takes a long time and teaches you stuff that you may not actually use at all.
I got a bit behind in class a few weeks ago but this earned me an A- on the exam.
Just quickly practice any concepts you know you're going to see. You should really be practicing everyday though.
Don't expect to be able to read and forever understand anything ever. Just code and syntax will come naturally. You can even write some pseudo code if the logic is a bit difficult for you to grasp.
