Have CD/DVDs become useless?
>Just stream or torrent music
>Stream or Torrent Films
>USBs are faster, more silent and have more space.
Can you think of any use?
>>
physical storage.
>>
Computers that use custom EFI. They won't let you boot to another HDD/SSD or USB device. But they will let you boot from the dvd drive that came with the prebuilt.

Of course you are better off avoiding systems that use a custom EFI. But sometimes shit happens.

sneakernet read-only media
>>

local backups, maybe. long term durability is poor, but it being read-only means you will leave it alone, unlike usb drives.
>>
Torrent doesn't cover everything. I still rip CDs regularly that I borrow from my local library.
>>
>>59735940
Both USB and DVD/CD tech is relevant. I use both for different applications. From an IT professionals standpoint, it's best to be familiar with multiple avenues. Sometimes attended installations require a simpler approach versus a UEFI spybox configuration.

>Failing to realise you can pay still <£5 for 10+ new songs every so often and get both a physical and FLAC copies while all your friends continue paying £10 a month to continue listening to the same music they don't even legally own.
Only downside is having to wait a couple of days for new music. Streaming is completely pointless when you're going to have a collection of songs that you listen to regularly and youtube is available to listen to anything you don't own.
>>
>>59735940
Legacy content, at this point. Blu-Ray might have a couple years left in it, so the CD storage medium itself will probably stick around for a little while, but DVDs are dead.
>>
Greater fidelity as far as movies and TV shows go.
>but muh private tracker syndicated crack release group
Nah, in my opinion it's not worth the storage space. Best solution is to rip ISOs of Blu-rays from redbox.
>>

I have 60 albums saved on Spotify, i listen to at least semi-regulary. As I use family sharing, I pay 1.5 eur / month. Given one album costs around 5 eur, I can give the same money for 60 albums for 16 years of Spotify. And I have availible nearly every song ever produced, including new releases and stuff unavailable in my country, one search and click away.

I have all the saved songs available on my phone and my laptop anytime without need for prior ripping and encoding. If i have internet access, i have ALL the songs available. Match that with your CDs.

ASUS UEFI Boots Win7 and Win10 from USB just fine, else I wouldn't be posting now.

HP Desktops do not.

Luckily there is rEFInd.
>>
I still buy music on CD because it's the highest fidelity possible, and you can rip digital files in whatever encoding you wish.
>>
>music
>movies
>playing games on old consoles
>cheaper than flash drives to give to people

Best cheap backups currently.
>>
>>59738724
If you're paying so little, then why even bother going the legal route though?
Each artist you listen to is getting fractions of a cent, you may as well just pirate.
With CDs you can at least be guaranteed that 10-20% of the CD price is going to them.
As for having your music anywhere with you, I have a 64GB SD card I paid £14 for that I can also take anywhere with me. As a bonus, I don't need to use mobile data or even have an internet connection at all to get buffer-free lossless music.

Whatever works for you though I guess, the point I was trying to make is that CD's still aren't dead, and there's no way I'm going to let (((them))) ever force me to have a license to music rather than physically owning it.
All the music I have now is mine until the day I die and there's no corporation controlling it that could decide to talk half of it away one day if they wanted to.

they're the cheapest form of backups for my use case
>>
>>59735963
In my experience, writable cds degrade to a worthless state in only a few years.
>>
>>59743764
Well you should be making backups more often than that

Optical Media is only good for archival data storage if you take care of them properly.

Flash media need electricity after a year or so or the "cells" start to use their information.
>>
>>59743764

Quality CD and DVD media can last decades for properly care for. BR media can last over a century if care for.

Protip: Avoid sunlight, humidity and temperature extremes.

I havent had a cd drive in my computer for 3 years now

only one time I needed data from one so I put it in my laptop and transferred the contents to a flash drive

>>
>>59735940
I use them for live CDs and pirating Playstation and Playstation 2 games. Honestly, it's just because I have a fuckload of them sitting around. They're there, so I find ways to use them.

Might look into BD for archival purposes.
>>
>>59746229
Toss an HDD in your PS2, load times are much better and you don't have to bother switching discs
>>
>>59735940
I have an older vehicle, circa 2008. No aux. Has an MP3-capable disc player though. So I have demand for CD media.

Also as a shitty IT, you will always lose DVDs or flash drives. All the time. Flash drives are expensive. DVDs are cheap.

My hard has enough storage to hold all my C and DVs, but I just watch You and Flix anyways. I don't even have a vision anymore.

(YES I'M FUCKING MAD YOU FAGGOT)

>>59746452
Aw shit bro. That's the worst era for cars.

Too old to have aux and bluetooth, too young to have cassette aux. It probably has steering wheel buttons and shit too, which the chinky $50 replacement units won't support.
>>
Turn into shurikens
>>
>>59745846
Same. 7 years here.

I had to dig up my ancient laptop from 2005 a couple of years ago when some dude mailed me an audio CD. Wtf is up with that.
>>
>>59746506
It's not too old, it just doesn't have it. My mom's car's an 04 model year and has aux input
>>
>>59746506
I don't even care desu. I'm not /o/ or anything, but I love my car. 70% of the time I drive without radio and with fan on low so I can better pay ATTN to any mechanical noises and traffic in general.

I can have a noise looked at later if I know about it in good time. I can only react in the moment to idiot drivers. (Not that I'm perfect)
>>
I like to have a physical representation of what I own, but they are worthless for games since half the game is missing from the disc.

"Xbox is shit lele" etc. but I did a test for keks and installing the game and downloading the other 50% of the game vs. downloading 100% of the game the time from insert to complete was about the same. Plus if you want to switch games you don't need to get up. Big thing in the US of Burgers.
>>
>>59746545
I just meant in terms of phone input, anon-kun. I feel ya.

I have both bluetooth and aux, but I keep it on NPR 95% of the time, and 4% I just play Caramelldansen to get hyped.
>>
>Just stream or torrent music
Where do they get their media?
>Stream or Torrent Films
Where do they get their media?
>USBs are faster, more silent and have more space
Not suitable for distribution.
>Can you think of any use?
Cheap distribution of media, just like it has always been used for.
>>
>>59746325
It's a slim, and I honestly like having physical copies even if they're pirated.
