I want to make the jump from 1080 to 4k. I been researching monitors and they are pretty steep. I have a GTX 970, is it good enough for 4k gaming? Also do I need G-Sync? I assume free-sync won't work with a NVIDIA card?

Dual 1080Ti's might get you there, but other than setting details lower in games on a single 1080Ti. No.

Best suggestion is wait until the end of 2018 and re-evaluate what games, what GPUs and what monitors are in the ecosystem. Make plans around what will be affordable for you during 2019. At the earliest. Might have to drop back & wait for 2020.
