I'm thinking of using infiniband for a kinda diskless battlestation, any thoughts?

Great minds think alike.

I don't think you can boot with that anon, just get a nice m2 and a home server/nas for storage.

I meant kinda diskless, the actual workstation will have an SSD for booting. While directories like home, or users and program files are mounted from the file server. If that makes sense?
go for it dude
even if it doesnt work you'll learn a ton & it'll be more interesting than 98% of the builds you see posted here
Regular hard disks don't really have enough read/write speed to even saturate GbE, so you'd need one hell of a RAID or SSD caching of some sort. Also, if you're not planning on using any InfiniBand-specific features and you're only going to use it for a cheap TCP/IP network, it's better to get some "old" 10GbE cards. They've gotten a lot cheaper since Mark did the whole IB network video thing.

OP here.
So I've tested with both HDD's and SSD's. It's plenty fast with a ton of bandwidth to spare. My end goal is a home SSI (Single System Image) cluster out of some old ivybridge and bulldozer machines I found.
