Why is it so hard to find a high spec, reasonably priced lappy, that doesn't look like a FRIGGIN spaceship?

This. If you can't do something on a relatively small and light laptop, like a P50 at the most, You should be doing it on a desktop anyway, stop cheating yourself out of efficiency. Your time is valuable.

>I want a powerful thin laptop that's also reasonably priced
Two of those things can't even be in one product, never mind all 3. This sounds like a fucking 8 year old's Christmas letter to Santa, asking for some imaginary shit. The sad thing is that you're probably an adult.
Dell inspiron laptops, take your pick, they're all super reasonably priced for their hardware, probably the best price:performance ratios on the market. More or less just comes down whether or not you want a 4k screen or are fine with 1080p, I think there's also i5 and i7 options available, and the newer ones have 1050ti's iirc, my 7559 only has a 760m, which honestly isn't bad and can play everything on the market today, but some games only at medium or high settings (like the witcher for example)
pros:
>great performance for a laptop, to get better you need to be willing to drop twice as much
>great battery life
>easy to upgrade/add m2, ssd, or ram, everything is super accessible
>pretty good cooling, at least in my 7559, I've had no overheating issues
cons:
>kind of heavy and thick, not really a problem for me, and I'd rather have that than cooling issues
>the bezel is pretty fucking big
Overall I'd recommend checking them out, I'm extremely happy with mine still and its like 2 years old now. Id even still recommend the 7559, you can probably get them for $700 or less if you look around

>le desktop performance meme
Do you realize that the laptop chips use exactly the same dies as the desktop ones? If you don't care about GPU and are not going to overclock, the difference is less than 20% (e.g. 7700HQ vs 7700 non-K Cinebench R15, +8% ST +17% MT).
It's difficult to make a case for the LGA 1151 pieces of shit, since they are designed as mobile processors first and foremost. Now, LGA 20xx is where things get interesting.
