>Firefox on Android
>nice browser, it can play media in background
>upgrade to 52.0.2
>now it can't play YouTube in background
>downgrade to 52.0.1
I guess I'm never going to update Firefox again.
I wonder who could be behind this?

Just checked, still works for me. On YouTube, at least.
On 52.0.2
Did the downgrading work for you?
Have the same problem with GNU/Iceweasel 45.7.0, even without any updates.
It also only affects videos being played directly on youtube, embedded youtube videos and videos from other sites work.
Sure the problem is not on youtube's side?

I didn't know it was the upgrade that stopped Firefox's Youtube backgrounding, I thought it was my phone. It's been a real pain in the arse trying to find an Android browser that can play Youtube in a different tab to the tab I'm using.
Chrome's no good either. I've been through a load of mobile browsers. The best I've got so far is Lightning Browser, but it can't for whatever reason actually display any video from Youtube, just the audio. Maybe I'll downgrade to an older Firefox version then, if that's what the problem is. Thanks. wtf Mozilla?
Is there any fork of Firefox for android ?
Would ESR version work?
I have few questions regarding Firefox for Android.
How can you "quit" with back button?
Also, my downloaded files are deleted after "quit" for some reason.
I use Nightly builds and I can't find anything in preferences.

Try TubeMate. It plays in the background and with the screen off if you tap the download arrow and choose play as audio. You don't get to see the video, but the audio keeps running if you switch apps or lock the screen.
It can also download videos right on your phone.
