You can use an indicator on any other DE but it'll pull some kde dependencies. About the distro try KDE neon user edition, kde has slimmed a lot since the kde4 days.

KaOS is supposed to be a minimal KDE distro, it has a live cd.

I've tried KDE on Mint, Ubuntu, and Manjaro and I've been less than impressed. All of the other DEs have some good qualities. I can't find anything KDE provides that Gnome can't deliver. I mean, other than a truck load of bugs.

I use it and it kind of sucks. It would be better if the SMS integration were thought out better. It's basically useless for sending SMS messsages.
