Used a rMBP 13" for a couple of years, daily, so a lot of use.

>some of the most common keys for me start to wear out like this
>all the plastic "feet" at the bottom fell off ages ago
>the charger needed to be taped 'cause of fraying
>the clam doesn't close as nicely as it used to, probably due to some small bend somewhere

Build quality my ass. Gotta admit that the metal parts look nicer than plastic that gets shiny.

>mac

Found your problem.
>>
So basically you don't take care of your belongings at all and that's the fault of Apple? I've had my rMBP for 2.5 years and it doesn't have those problems.

>>

>plastic that gets shiny.

It got shiny because it filled up with grease from your hands and you never once wiped it off with a damp washcloth.
>>
>>59693077
A laptop shouldn't need babying.

I've used it in a totally normal manner, carrying it around and using it wherever. This means that it would be very inconvenient to avoid moving it around (which might protect the plastic feet) or to always make sure that the charging cable is just in the right angle.

The keyboard I've just used to type a lot every day.

The bend can be forgiven, it is just a tradeoff using an "aluminum unibody"instead of plastic. It hasn't ever been dropped from a high position or anything, though. It is very small anyway.
>>
>>59693035
I've had mine for almost five years now and it still looks brand new, minus a few scratches on the bottom cover.

OP here, I also have Thinkpads from 2004, 2006, 2012, they're all fine except for normal signs of use.

All of their chargers are fine, their keyboards are a bit shiny but not fucked up like that, all of their plastic/rubber feet have stayed on and all of them close properly.

Maybe MacBooks just aren't that great if you use them for 4-8 hours a day.

Yes, this is quite common. The Mac, and Apple in general, are hot garbage. Absolute trash tier. Literally, polished shit.
>>
>>59693234

Or maybe you used the macbook more than the thinkpads. The touchpad on my mothers laptop is worn away just like those keyboard keys on your laptop are, and I can tell you exactly why: she never ever not once even considered wiping the thing down and constantly used it while and after eating greasy food and snacks.

You didn't take care of your thing, and it suffered more wear and tear than it should have as a result.
>>
>>59693234
I used to have a Macbook as well and it fell apart in so many ways. That's why I moved on to Thinkpads too. Apple charger cables are designed to break easily so you would buy another one, I did that too. The base of the cable scorched black and smelled like burning plastic and I didn't want housefires. Apple usually has the worst build quality of their price range. Not innovative design-wise but durability-wise.

The MacBook is the only laptop to do this kinda stuff on me and I've used laptops as my main PC:s for a decade. The other laptop where the rubber feet fell off was a Samsung netbook. I had an older MBP, too; it had the charger problem and the plastic feet problem, but none of the others.

>You didn't take care of your thing,
The thing is, all of these are pretty common problems associated with Macbooks. The chargers constantly get shit reviews, the plastic feet problem is common and the keys doing that is not unheard of.

If I didn't find more photos of the keys doing that, I'd assume that I've used the keys with some chemical on my fingers on accident. I try to keep my electronics reasonably clean (the macbook is currently very dusty though, I dropped using it as an everyday carry and now it just sits in my home, open for certain remote tasks)

The bend thing is not a big problem: as I said, just a tradeoff for using aluminum in such a case. Laptops may get small hits and I won't blame the manufacturers for those too much. Still, that doesn't happen with other types of construction quite as easily.

>>59693373
My charger has worked fine. I taped and put some support on it right after I noticed it starting to fray, I know Apple chargers and cables demand a bit too much respect.

Still, it is impressive to be on sixth place when your cheapest laptops cost (over) a thousand moneys. It implies a pretty hefty share of sales if we looked at that price bracket.

I do in fact have a mild skin condition that gets kinda bad during the winter.

My need to use ointments n lotions on my skin could be blamed for the damage otherwise but
1. It hasn't happened to my other electronics
2. I am careful to not type with lotion'd hands
3. The damage appeared during a warm time, not when I actually use a lot of medicinal cream

It does have one advantage though - if it doesn't get bent or otherwise abused, it will look like new for many years.

Plastic kinda can't do that. It'll get small scratches more easily and some wear at least.

Great material for desktop replacement or laptops that will otherwise be treated very kindly.
>>
>>59694983
Old Dell Latitudes were made from some hard plastic (outside that is, inside was metal skeleton, it was durable as fuck*). It would not scratch, it would not age or brush, it was really hard. It would crack after a lot of years of use, but the inner metal chassis would still keep everything in shape fine, because the plastic was only an outer shell. Of course, that sort of construction was not thin and shit.

* I killed mine after 11 years of use when inserting some badly fitting PCMCIA card - that was the only weakness, because it could press on motherboard inside and probably broke something with the tension. I shouldn't have kept removing and inserting that wifi/lan shit.
>>
>>59693475

Hmm, yeah, I think that my Dell Latitude and Precision laptops stayed in very good shape.

The Precision M90 had some odd flaw though, one day, when it was about 6 years old, I opened the clam and put it in position and crack - there was a naasty destroyed area on the beautiful 17" 1920x1200 screen. I applied no pressure or anything and being a 17" desktop replacement it had mostly been sitting on a desk.

>>
>>59695954
Yah, I don't mean that the rMBP was totally horrible. Just that it doesn't really get to claim superior build quality from me. I will not buy another one; for the price I'd rather get truly superior durability (or just save money by buying a refurb business-grade machine)

All the stuff I posted aside, it is still working fine after about 3 years of heavy use. If I wanted to continue to use it as a daily carry, I could replace the feet, I could replace the keys, I could buy a new charger, etc.
>>
>>59696136
in the world of consumer laptops, I disagree. Most are incredibly mediocre. There's only a small handful like the XPS, I'd say, are in the same league.

If the build quality is top priority though, business class is probably the best bet, but MacBooks are a nice compromise between high end build quality, and consumer wants.
