Damage depends more on the tornado itself. If it's a strong F4 or an F5 then it doesn't matter how a building is constructed, it's just gone.

American standards are the joke here.
How do they still manage to progress?
>>
>>59687439
That's not true at all. You can build to level 5 hurricanes but it's European-quality construction and so it's expensive.

Only a few areas in the USA require this because they're so poor.

In Europe, to build a house properly is pricey but you pay just a little more to buy it.
In USA you build a house with wood and cardboard and still cost you a life mortgage to buy it.

More like

>it can seep through the drywall and reach the studs, and over time the structural integrity of an entire wall can go
>remediation of mold is a huge problem
>have to install vapor barrier and utilize a non mold insulation
>HVAC needs to be able to keep every room in the house at 40% at under
>including the bathrooms and sump rooms
>bathrooms need special product to deal with moisture
>doesn't hold up over time no matter what

Construction methods for residential buildings are made to be cheap, and in a lot of cases building code forces things to stagnate. There are much better ways to build, and no simple brick houses aren't necessarily better either.

Don't be a retard.

I'm European too and live in a "brick" house.
The bricks are only on the exterior, not between rooms - that would be retarded.

And unless it's a load bearing wall, it's usually just a wooden frame with drywall on either side.
Yes, it's easy to poke through - that's a good thing in case *shock* you want to lay some cables through the wall.
>>
>>59693847
most of buildings in central and south america are made of bricks and precast concrete and are pretty damn resistant to eartquakes...

Chile has to rebuild every time there's a earthquake. They've finally switched to metal buildings. It's too expensive to reinforce masonry enough to withstand earthquakes.
>>
>>59693976
A tornado would rip your house cleanly off its foundation just like any other.
>>
>>59693924
>pretty damn resistant to eartquakes

Are they?

I thought they had terrible earthquake damage compared to USA and Japan.

Here in the Netherlands we only have weak earthquakes caused by natural gas extraction, no serious quakes caused by natural phenomenons.
And this is what happens to our brick houses.
>>
>>59694018

>>
>>59694025
>caused by natural gas extraction

>>
>>59693984
Most buildings resisted the earthquakes, only the poorly built and old buildings crashed down... also, you have to take into consideration that any kind of building, no matter how strong it is, can only withstand so many 7-8 magnitude earthquakes...
>>
>>59689901
same here
happens few times per week
can get annoying but fixes itself after like 5 minutes
>>
>>59694095

Yes, but masonry has no give to it. Any earthquake is going to damage the structure. With wood and metal, there's some flex in the building material that allows it to withstand earthquakes and strong gusts of wind.
>>
>>59694025
Where I live we've had earthquakes since I was born, not a single house has crashed down... we had a town disappear after a earthquake a few years ago but they issue in that case was the place where it was built
>>
>>59694025
>>59694094

Just classic natural gas extraction.

Modern houses have central vacuum build into them, why don't they run networking to a central location as well?
>>
>>59694269
In theory perhaps.

In practice you'll be lucky to get 20Mbps in the city with 9001 WiFi signals all around you.
>>
>>59694305
They are all thick brick walls that can bear the load.
They don't have to. You can usually take a wall out if needed.

But why would you want to start creating extra shit anyways? It's well built and good, why ruin it?

>>59694318
They are load bearing, they all could be load bearing walls if they would have to, obviously you can't take away too many of them but mostly you can take down a wall and the others will just bear the rest of the load.
They are not just a frame with cardboard.

It's a lot harder to plan where and how many Ethernet runs you'd need unless you're designing the house yourself.

You have no idea what a load bearing wall is, do you?

And soon you'll have sharia law to make sure it stays that way.

They are all built as load bearing walls even when they don't have to bear a load.

Are you special?

Because people's needs change over time? You really can't think of a situation where someone might want to remodel a room or two?
>>
>>59694430
How convenient.

Than what do you call a wall, that's not just a frame and gypsum/plywood, it's also not correctly having a load on it, but if you took out the wall it has a corner with, it could easily bear the load it would receive.

The wall itself is constructed like any other load bearing wall in the house, even when it's not marked in the blueprint as one.
>>
>>59694440
It was STEEL-BEAMS/DRYWALL
or how I recently have started to call it steel-beams+drywall
>>
>>59694487
steelwall can't dry-beams
>>
>>59694457
It's not like you can't take down any walls at all, just that you have to know what you are doing.
Obviously it's a good thing to have the option to do so if needed.
>>
>>59694471

It's just a well-built wall. The composition of the wall is irrelevant. A load-bearing wall is one that is critical to the structural integrity of the building. They usually run perpendicular to the rafters and floor joists.

Through the walls. I ran coax and ethernet to all the rooms of my house when I moved in. Have a switch up in the crawlspace above my hallway that everything is connected to.

>>59685826 (and every other 'american walls are stupid' post)
You are a fucking idiot. The drywall is on the interior and covers the insulation and studs and structural work. The structural work is still there.

Kek

Logic in Eastern Europe
>>
>>59700112
That's true, but it depends on the tornado intensity.
They had to extend the Fujita scale in Europe because homes were sturdier and the original Fujita scale couldn't apply properly.
The Hautmont tornado back in 2008 did flatten brick and mortar homes, and that's why it was classified as EF4.
Overall, "American" homes as defined ITT will tend to get flattened at a lower tornado intensity than classic brick and mortar homes.
>>
>>59686935
>>Only muricans make houses out of gypsum and plywood
This is such fucking horseshit and you know it, modern houses in Europe and Asia (Hell, old Japanese houses even) use thinner material too.

You stupid fucks always try to post shit like this and act smug, but you just end up looking like a fucking retard to anyone who knows anything about the modern world outside of their local bubble.

Is that the biggest thing you can brag about? Your old houses use brick and concrete? Congrats shitbrain so do older houses in the US.

Then modern society figured out they could build a perfectly sturdy house for much cheaper and they went with that.

Amercian House Building:

> 20mph wind comes
> house is blown away
> rebuild it with the same shitty materials

but why?!
