Explain to me like a 5 year old what a subnet mask is and how it is done

its a magic thing idk its just done :^)
>>
bitmask that identifies the network part of an IP address
>>
for example

255.255.255.252

you can have 4 addresses and 2 hosts within this subnet mask.

the last number is your (host portion of the address)
the first 9 numbers are the network portion of the address
it's a 32-bit address

read up on CIDR notation

Ok so you have a house with computers in it. You want your computer and your roommates computer to be connected to the internet, but not to each other. You can use a subnet mask to make sure the two computers don't look like they're grouped.

Example:
a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 allows for an IP range of
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255

a subnet mask of 255.255.255.128 allows for two IP ranges
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.126
and
192.168.0.129 to 192.168.0.255

Essentially configuring the subnet masks allows you to separate computers into different networks which can be controlled by different routers and such.

think of network address with 4 numbers like so

0000

now you are on a pc with address 0001

you are in the accounting department

and there is also a sales department

so the sales dept gets addresses from 1000-1999

and the accounting gets addresses from 0000-0999

in other word, you are in the 0xxx network and the sales dept is in the 1xxx network and that is the network mask with the x's replaces with 0 because that's how binary mask works.

because when you get an address, to figure out what network it belongs to, you would mask away the xxx i.e. 0001 masked by 1000 would give you 0xxx.

all of this in binary of course

theyre on the same network because they're all local.

What you're trying to say is that you can have networks within networks and subnet masks allows us to do this
>>
>>59685739
Not OP but thanks, I always wondered and it finally makes sense to me.
>>
Look at the subnet mask in binary and you will see how it is basically a bitmask specifying how large the subnet is.
255.255.255.0
11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
255.255.255.128
11111111.11111111.11111111.10000000

Only if you explain to us what a supernet is and how it is made.

Do you know what a subway is? A submarine? Well, the "sub"-part of the world simply means "below" so the subnet is a secret part of the Internet that exists underneath the actual Internet. In order to access it you need to wear a subnet mask and use a hacker tool called CMD.EXE.

So how is the subnet mask made, created?
How does the cloud know which part is reserved for the host and which part is reserved for the network?

I don't think 5 year olds know this.
>>
>>59685921
This. It's incredible how retarded /g/ is, all these shit answers but at least someone knows something.
>>
>>59685927
math.
>>
It's just the number where you need to enter 255.255.255.0 and your internet will work

Now explain broadcast address and how that works
>>
Now explain a wild card and I'll be impressed
