assuming i don't play video games, what is the downside to putting together one of those dual Xeon 2670 servers and just using it as a workstation and getting ~18,000 in passmark and 64gb RAM for ~$500 used?

If you don't play games then you have no need for all that power in the first place.
>>59673333
What are you gonna use it for?
>>59673485
What do you know about what he could use it for which could use all that power?
>>59673504
audio production 90%, video production and photo manipulation 10%
i hate video games and don't give a fuck about them
>>59673535
If you are doing audio production,
chances are you are gonna have to
deal with video games since they
are the best way to market music
and tracks.
Look at that bignic guy who did the
Domina soundtrack.
>>59673535
Audio production software just needs a massive single core and fuck tons of RAM.
>>59673578
Do they really just use one core? that's sort of lame. you'd think any production software would be optimized. i guess i'll just get a 7700k or 7350k and a shitload of ram then.
>>59673615
>lame
nice one
>>59673333
For that money, get it.
Ignore those who say you don't need that much power. I'll assume that you'll find ways of using it. Personally, I'd use it as a proxmox server, and not as a workstation, but that's me.
>>59673578
Umm. I can't think that's true. Except for the shittiest of software. A whole lot of what it does is trivially parallelizable.
>>59673333
it will be huge and hot. will need a much more powerful psu, two cpu coolers... not worth the bullshit.
