is a .DS_store file basically the mac version of a .db file?
wtf is it?
>In the Apple macOS operating system, .DS_Store is a file that stores custom attributes of its containing folder, such as the position of icons or the choice of a background image. The name is an abbreviation of Desktop Services Store, reflecting its purpose.
So, no, it is actually the mac version of desktop.ini.

So what exactly does it do?
Friend of mine sent a zip folder, the transfer failed but inside the zip was a .DS_Store file. Wondering what it's purpose is.

Mac OS X's Finder stores folder window positions information and the suchlike in that file.
So that when you reopen a folder, the finder window reopens in the same place as last time on your desktop.
Just delete those files. They're worthless.

Nothing unless you're on a mac, feel free to delete it.

Ah, so its nothing malicious then?

It's nothing malicious, no.
It's just annoying clutter.

It just stores per directory info, such as size/settings/view.
You can disable ds_store writes:

Or install this little tool on Macs on your network so they stop writing these files to the network mounts and selected drives:
