or some reason, I'm kinda sad that I've never seen an 'official' statement on his condition. It's was all: doctors say this, family says that.
Steve never came forth and talked with his fanbase about his illness.
Any speculations on why?

Read Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs.
Jobs always had a very obsessive relationship with food. He would go on week long fasts or eat only fruits for months at a time. He was also great at convincing himself that he was right.
So Jobs didn't really believe he was going to die and didn't get appropriate medical treatment until too late.
They basically had to drag his ass into chemo and his obsession with food grew worse. It was very difficult to feed him a nutritious amount of food.
He was also very private in his personal life.

A lot of times he was right where it mattered. And he would accept advice when it could be proved he was wrong. But if there wasn't anyone to tell him he was wrong he stuck to his decisions.
