is there any reason not to?
No but 50/100GB verbatim blu-ray discs provide an excellent form of long term storage. They are said to last over 100 years if stored properly.

They're good for making backups. Burn a disc (preferably encrypted), store it somewhere. It's an easy and cheap way to get off-site backup.
>What about HDDs? (besides cost)
Cost (or rather cost per terabyte) is the only reason to use HDDs anymore. But its a really, really, really big important reason.

What about longevity? Don't HDDs last longer?

Depends on the usage pattern. In enterprise usage with a heavy write load, SSDs do wear out, since they have a limited number of write cycles. Enterprises generally don't care since they'd want to replace the hardware after X years anyway, for better performance, to maintain a support contract and the availability of spare parts, etc. In consumer usage where the drive is read-mostly, you probably won't ever bump into the write-cycle limit, and an SSD will last longer than an HDD. Mind you, both are highly likely to last long enough in desktop usage that they'll be replaced before failure anyway.
