Considering buying a portable HDD
What should I pick?
1TB is more than enough.
Well, enjoy having the moving parts break.
Why not just buy a portable blu-ray player?
Your data will be much much safer that way and even verbatim blu-rays are like $2/50GB disc when you buy the large spindle.

currently using a 2 TB seagate for back ups, I recommend it. I'm not that experienced with HDDs but so far I've had no real issues with this one.

>hardware encryption
Is there an HDD inside?
What happens when the case breaks? Is all data lost forever, or can I just slip the old drive into an identical case, type in the pass, and sort it out?
This is really a general external drive with hardware encryption question. To me it all sounds very dangerous. Looking forward to someone more knowledgeable than me to alleviate my doubts.

HDD sold separately.
No idea if there is some unique key in each of those boxes, I have the one with no encryption but only iso emulation, works great for os installing etc.

Anything hitachi or samsung. Thank me 16 years from now.
I own 2 western digital portable ultras, one for desktop and one for Xbox. Both have been working fine for 2 years. I use the desktop one for backup and storing various static Media like videos, movies, music, pictures, etc.
Have a few friends who own the same drive, they haven't had any issues either. One carries it around all the time at school.
It's basically a laptop drive, so set your expectations to that.
Don't know about Seagate drives, just went with WD because had a friend who owned one already.
I have this same one and it's pretty good to be honest. Going to have to get a use for it, it's sitting on my shelf.
